Virtual Event: The Art (and Science) of Change
Perennial Habits Course (Apr 26th at 7:00 pm EST)
Greetings Readers!
You are cordially invited to a casual gathering on the art (and science) of change. Although this virtual event is part of our Perennial Habits Course, everyone is welcome to attend! Today’s event begins at 7:00 pm EST and is the first of three virtual events (details below). Don’t worry if you are unable to participate — a recording will be made available to those that register now.
The Art (and Science) of Change
As I mentioned in the first email meditation, How to Change When Change is Hard, the art (and science) of change has fascinated me for a long time. I’ve taken countless courses, coaching programs, and even certifications on the topic. And still, I find change challenging and a bit of a mystery at times. Nevertheless, the art of living — requires us to understand the art of change.
Wisdom traditions generally stress the notion of “turning words into works.” The Stoic philosopher Epictetus urged his students, “Don’t talk about your philosophy. Embody it.” There is good reason for these types of quotes to be prevalent today. They are true. It is much easier to talk (and write) about ideas than to integrate wisdom into daily life. This was true thousands of years ago and will likely be true thousands of years from now.
The fact that change is hard is all the more reason to connect and have an honest conversation on the topic.
As Fred Roger famously embodied on his show Mister Roger’s Neighborhood many decades ago,
“Anything that’s human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable. When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary. The people we trust with that important talk can help us know that we are not alone.”
The same is true for change. To struggle to create new habits is all too human. However, by discussing these shared challenges, and the art (and science) of change, we inevitably make change more manageable.
