The Fundamental Rule of Life

In this episode, I share a short clip from a recent conversation with Massimo Pigliucci, the author of the new book The Quest for Character: What the Story of Socrates and Alcibiades Can Teach Us about Our Search for Good Leaders. The full conversation will release next week on In Search of Wisdom.

As a final question, I ask Massimo — What philosophical exercise has been most important or impactful in his own quest for character? If you would prefer to watch it on Youtube, see below:

As you’ll hear in the episode, Massimo points to what is often referred to as the dichotomy of control. But, according to Massimo, the word “control” can be misleading.

What is Up to Us?

The Enchiridion or “manual” begins with a simple (but not easy) lesson known today as the dichotomy of control. What do we actually control in life?

According to Epictetus,

Some things are within our power, and some things are beyond our power. Within our power are opinion, aim, desire, aversion, and, in a word, whatever affairs are our own. Beyond our power are body, property, reputation, office, and, in a word, whatever are not properly our own affairs.

Although it’s a straightforward practice — it can be challenging to apply consistently in daily life.

Thank you for listening; I hope you found something useful.

Until next time, be wise and be well,

JW
