Greetings Readers!
Welcome to another edition of our Perennial Meditations (Saturday Review) with a short contemplation and links to this week’s meditations.
The 7-week Perennial Habits course started this week with meditations on How to Change When Change is Hard and a podcast on How to “Think” About Change. Our courses are free for members (and anyone interested in becoming a member that cannot afford it can request a complimentary membership).
Here is your Saturday Review with a short meditation & contemplation to consider this weekend!
Seeing Beyond Expectations
This week’s Saturday Meditation comes from the American writer John Steinbeck. In East of Eden, Steinbeck wrote,
You are one of the rare people who can separate your observation from your preconception. You see what is, where most people see what they expect.
As discussed in Making Sense of Our Minds, our brains predict, classify, and divide the world. However, our mind’s labeling and prediction are necessary for daily habits, routines, and even language. Becoming aware of our expectations or predictions around how life might unfold can delude us from seeing what is.
Contemplation Questions (Pick one or create your own!):
How can you start to notice how your expectations might influence your perceptions?
In what ways can you embrace the uncertainty of life this week?
