Where Are You Going?
This week’s Saturday meditation comes from the Tao Te Ching (often attributed to the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu). You can expect to learn more about Lao Tzu in an upcoming meditation for The Art of Living: From Socrates to Aquinas series.
According to Lao Tzu,
When people see things as beautiful, ugliness is created. When people see things as good, evil is created.
Being and non-being produce each other. Difficult and easy complement each other. Long and short define each other. High and low oppose each other. Fore and aft follow each other. Therefore, the Master can act without doing anything and teach without saying a word. […]
When we determine where we’re going and what truly matters, we also clarify what doesn’t matter. For example, when someone commits to living a virtuous life, they are also committing to avoiding vice (at least to the best of their ability). Although it is not always helpful to attach labels (as discussed in Making Sense of the Mind). Leading a life requires us to reflect on where we’re headed and what matters.
Contemplation Questions (Pick one or create your own!):
Where are you headed?
How do you know if you’re headed in the wrong direction?
