Dear Friends,
Thank you for reading and listening this week! Below is a short contemplation on being guided by reason, along with links to this week’s podcasts and meditations.
📿 On Being Guided by Reason
This week’s contemplation comes from the writings of the philosopher Baruch de Spinoza (1632—1677). Spinoza explained,
In life … it is especially useful to perfect, in so far as we can, our intellect or reason, and this is man’s highest happiness or blessedness – for blessedness is nothing but the contentment of mind that stems from the intuitive knowledge of God. No life … is rational without understanding, and things are good only in so far as they help man to enjoy the life of the mind … But those things which prevent man from perfecting his reason and enjoying a rational life – those only we call evil. It is, judged from the absolute perspective, permissible for everyone to do, by the highest right of nature, whatever he judges will be of advantage to him. Nothing is more useful to man in preserving his being and enjoying a rational life than a man who is guided by reason.
