If thereโs one thing that philosophical and spiritual traditions agree on, it is the cultivation of compassion. Interestingly, embarking on the project of becoming wiser generally results in one becoming more compassionate.
In his book Wiser, Dr. Dilip Jeste explains,
No single component of wisdom or becoming wise is more essential than prosocial behavior, doing things that benefit others or the society as a whole (and thus, you too). These are driven by traits like empathy, compassion, and altruism.
We are social animals and, therefore, do not fare well alone. To live well, we must work in groups and get along with numerous individuals around us. โTrue wisdom and grace,โ observes Dr. Jeste, โrequires an open mind and heart.โ
