The Art of Clear Thinking
In this episode of In Search of Wisdom, my guest is Hasard Lee, the author of The Art of Clear Thinking: A Stealth Fighter Pilot’s Timeless Rules for Making Tough Decisions. Hasard is a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot who began his career flying the F-16. As a flight commander, he led his pilots into combat during one of the most intense periods of the War in Afghanistan. He was then hand-picked to fly the F-35―the most advanced and expensive weapons system in history―which was still in development at the time.
In the conversation, Hasard and I discuss,
Deliberate thinking
How to assess problems
Choosing a course of action
Learning from mistakes
Obstacles to clear thinking
Wisdom in daily life and much more

Some intriguing reflections of the experience of a warfighter. The position they are in is exceptional and I find fascinating from the perspective of someone who has spent the better part of a lifetime in the study of human behaviour. As a peace philosopher and practitioner, I am interested in how these processes and clarity of thinking are equally applied to the 'assets' in their military network who make the decisions to go to war. From a psycholinguistic perspective, I also find the language of the military interesting.
