On Friendship
This week’s Saturday meditation is on friendship. The short passage comes from the Letters of the Dutch philosopher Baruch de Spinoza (1632-1677),
Of all the things that are beyond my power, I value nothing more highly than to be allowed the honor of entering into bonds of friendship with people who sincerely love truth. For, of things beyond our power, I believe there is nothing in the world which we can love with tranquility except such people.
— Spinoza, Letters
Similarly, Seneca wrote in a letter to Lucilius, “Nothing will ever please me, no matter how excellent or beneficial, if I must keep the knowledge of it to myself… No good thing is pleasant to possess without friends to share it.”
Reflection Questions (Pick one or create your own):
How have your friendships shaped who you are today?
What is one thing you can do to value (or create) a friendship?
