📿 The End of Clinging
This week’s Saturday meditation comes from the Connected Discourses (Samyutta Nikaya) of the Buddha. The Buddha taught,
Just so, Ananda, in one who contemplates the enjoyment of all things that make for clinging, craving arises'; through craving, craving is conditioned; through clinging, the process of becoming, rebirth is conditioned; through rebirth are old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair. Thus arises the whole mass of suffering again in the future.
For the Buddha, getting to the root of suffering is essential. He continues to explain to Ananda that the person who dwells “contemplating the sorrow of all things that make for clinging, craving ceases; when craving ceases, clinging ceases…” Although the Buddha said, “Life is suffering.” He also taught a path to the end of suffering.
Contemplation Questions (Pick one or create your own!):
How can you begin to understand your suffering?
How can you embark on a path to the “end of clinging”?
