Dear Fellow Traveler,
A few days ago, while walking a well-worn path near my house, I was reminded how easy it is to forget the lessons we’ve learned. Strangely, one of the more challenging aspects of life is remembering. I found myself asking, “Is it possible to forget to live?”
It might sound odd for someone to say, “Don’t forget to live!” But it’s wise advice. It’s actually a maxim that the poet Goethe lived by. The Stoics, Platonists, and Christians advise the practice of memento mori (remember death). However, people like Goethe and the philosopher Spinoza suggested memento vivere (remember to live).
