How to Quit: A Philosophical Guide

Today’s essay is about something most of us rarely talk about.

Quitting.

From the time we’re young, we’re taught to admire perseverance.

• “Finish what you start.”

• “Never give up.”

• “Stay the course.”

• “Push through.”

And often, that advice is wise.

But not always.

Sometimes the bravest, clearest, most honest act is not to continue—but to quit. Not from laziness. Not from fear. But from truth. From discernment. From a deeper loyalty to what matters more than pride or the story we once told about ourselves.

Ancient philosophy and spiritual traditions understood something modern culture often forgets: Quitting is not always failure. Sometimes, it is loyalty to a higher calling.

1. Some Paths Must Be Abandoned for Wisdom to Begin

Two of the most influential spiritual figures in history were, by every respectable standard of their time, quitters.

Siddhartha Gautama—the man we would come to call the Buddha—was born into privilege. His father arranged his life like a fortress. No suffering. No sickness. Only pleasure, ease, and inheritance. The plan was simple: Siddhartha would be king.

And then, one day, he left.

The ancient texts tell us that when he encountered sickness, old age, and death for the first time, something broke open inside him. The life he had been promised suddenly felt false. So he walked away—away from palace, wealth, power, and certainty.

From the outside, it seemed like betrayal. From the inside, it was clarity. He did not fail to face difficulty. He refused to accept what didn’t feel true.

Heraclitus, the early Greek philosopher, made a quieter but equally radical exit. Born into an aristocratic political family, leadership was expected of him. Instead, he stepped away from public life and devoted himself to understanding the hidden order of reality.

He wrote:

“A man’s character is his fate.”

Heraclitus refused to let inherited power be his fate.

And he is the one who told us:

“You cannot step into the same river twice.”

The river changes. And so do you.

A life that once fit may no longer belong to who you are becoming. To stay out of loyalty to the past may be to betray the present.

The first lesson of quitting is this: Some stories must be abandoned before truer ones can be lived.

The Buddha and Heraclitus did not quit because they were weak.

They quit because they woke up.

2. Perseverance Without Discernment Becomes a Trap

We love stories of grit—heroes who never give up. But perseverance without clarity isn’t always admirable; sometimes it’s just inertia.

Annie Duke, former professional poker player and author of Quit, learned this the hard way. Poker punishes ego. The longer you stay in a losing hand out of pride or hope, the worse the damage becomes.

She writes:

“The difference between a successful person and an unsuccessful one is not that the successful person never quits. It’s that they quit the right things at the right time.”

And elsewhere:

“We tend to treat quitting as a character flaw, when in reality it’s often the smartest option available.”

Staying in a job that quietly drains you, a project that no longer makes sense, or a role you’ve outgrown can feel noble the longer you endure it. But as Duke reminds us, the world doesn’t reward stubbornness—it rewards contact with reality.

The Stoic philosopher Epictetus once said:

“If you want to improve, be content to appear foolish or stupid.”

It’s important to acknowledge that quitting often looks foolish in the moment.

Especially when others are invested in your staying. It can feel like public failure. But visible foolishness may be the cost of invisible integrity.

Marcus Aurelius gives this advice:

“If it is not right, don’t do it; if it is not true, don’t say it.”

The second lesson of quitting is this: Perseverance only turns into wisdom when it is directed toward what is right and true. Otherwise, it becomes fear or pride hiding behind a facade of strength.

3. A Finite Life Requires Deliberate Quitting

The most uncompromising argument for quitting does not come from gambling or palace gates, but from time itself.

Oliver Burkeman, in his book Four Thousand Weeks, reminds us that the average human life spans about 4,000 weeks.

That’s it.

He writes:

“The average human lifespan is absurdly, terrifyingly, insultingly short. There is no possibility of fitting in everything we might want to do.”

The harsh truth is that you will not accomplish most of what you could have done. You will not become most of what you could have been.

Every “yes” quietly buries a thousand other lives.

Burkeman adds:

“The truth is that you never really get to control your time at all—and the more you demand that you should, the more frustrated and anxious you’re likely to feel.”

We fantasize about managing time well enough to “fit everything in.” But finitude does not ask for better efficiency; it demands selection.

Monastic traditions understood this long before productivity culture. Monks and nuns quit wealth, possessions, public status—not because these things are evil, but because a finite life cannot carry everything at once.

Even Jesus talks about quitting:

“Anyone who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.”

Renounce. Leave. Quit.

There are many names for simply choosing a new path. The third lesson of quitting is this: In a finite life, you don’t have the option not to quit. The only question is whether you will quit passively in exhaustion or deliberately in wisdom.

The Hidden Logic of Quitting

When we step back, a pattern appears.

The Buddha quit to seek awakening. Heraclitus quit to seek truth. The Stoics quit anything that contradicts virtue.

Different traditions.

Same structure.

To refuse to quit anything is to refuse to choose. To stay on every path you once began is to let old decisions, made by earlier versions of you, govern your life.

There is likely something in your life right now that belongs more to your past than to your future. A role that once fit but now constricts. A version of success that no longer tells the truth.

You may not stay because it is right. You may stay because leaving would fracture the story you once told about who you are.

Heraclitus whispers that the river has changed, and so have you.

The Buddha walks into the dark to find a deeper light.

So, the philosophical guide to quitting doesn’t end with a command but with a question: What path are you on that might be steering you away from the person you truly want to become?

If you can answer that honestly, quitting might not be the end of your story.

It may be the beginning.

Stop Fixing Yourself. Try This Instead.

Happy New Year! I hope this finds you well. Today, we’re talking about the idea of self-improvement.

Many of us treat our inner life like a home renovation project.

If I could just fix my overthinking, my consistency issues, my need for approval, and my procrastination, I could finally become “the person I’m supposed to be.” Yet often, the more we try to fix ourselves, the more tense and self-doubting we become—it’s like we are managing a difficult employee in our heads.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: much of self-improvement is just self-rejection in nicer clothes. Stay with me…

Carl Rogers—one of the most respected psychologists of the 20th century—offers a different perspective: real change doesn’t come from forcing yourself into a new personality. It comes from accepting what’s true, without flinching.

This is not a call for complacency.

It’s a call for a more realistic kind of transformation—one based on honesty rather than self-conflict.

1. “Fixing yourself” often means you’re relating to yourself like a problem.

There’s a particular tone we adopt when we’re in fix-it mode. It’s subtle, but you can hear it:

• “What’s wrong with me?”

• “Why can’t I get it together?”

• “Normal people don’t struggle like this.”

This tone is not neutral; it’s adversarial. It creates an internal split: part of you becomes the critic, while another part becomes the defective product.

Rogers noticed something many of us learn the hard way: when you treat yourself with contempt, you don’t get better—you become defensive. You hide, perform, pretend, or alternate between harsh discipline and burnout.

His most famous line is well-known for a reason:

“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself as I am, then I change.”

That’s not a motivational poster.

It’s a diagnosis of how change actually works.

Because “accept” doesn’t mean “approve of everything,” it means: stop denying what’s here. If you’re anxious, admit you’re anxious. If you’re lonely, admit you’re lonely. If you’re resentful, admit you’re resentful.

Fixing skips that step. Fixing tries to leap over reality into an improved version of reality. And the leap is usually powered by shame.

Rogers advocates a gentler yet more demanding approach: be honest about yourself and stay with that honesty long enough to understand it.

That’s the beginning of change.

2. Trade self-correction for self-contact.

If “fixing yourself” is a stance of conflict, what’s the alternative?

Rogers would call it congruence—a fancy term for a genuine alignment between your inner experience and your outward life. Not perfect alignment. Not constant peace. Just the basic integrity of not living at odds with your own reality.

Much suffering comes from the gap between: what you truly feel, what you think you’re allowed to feel, and what you pretend to feel.

When that gap widens, you become divided. You start focusing on appearances instead of living from authenticity. And you can’t simply “fix” your way out of division. You can only return to what is actually happening inside you.

Here’s a simple way to do it that doesn’t require a new identity or a perfect morning routine:

The Three-Sentence Check-In:

1. Right now I’m noticing… (a feeling, a bodily sensation, a thought-loop)

2. If I’m honest, what I really want is… (rest, clarity, reassurance, courage, space)

3. One small kind step I can take is… (text a friend, walk, drink water, write one paragraph, make the appointment…)

That’s it.

This is what “try this instead” looks like: contact, not correction.

Rogers’ entire approach assumes something hopeful: underneath our defenses, people generally lean toward growth when the environment is safe enough for honesty. That includes the environment you foster inside your own mind.

So instead of asking, “How do I fix myself?” try:

• “What am I actually experiencing?”

• “What am I avoiding admitting?”

• “What do I need that I’m currently trying to obtain through pressure or performance?”

This isn’t indulgence. It’s precision. It’s how you stop swinging at shadows.

Still, many of us have a reasonable fear: if I stop “fixing,” won’t I become passive?

Won’t I just stagnate?

This is where a supportive voice helps. And it comes from a very different tradition.

3. Stop trying to fix what isn’t yours to control.

Epictetus—once enslaved, later a teacher of philosophy—had little patience for inner drama that pretends to be “self-work” while actually being a covert attempt to control the world.

He begins The Enchiridion with a bracing distinction:

“Some things are up to us and some things are not up to us.”

In other words, much of our suffering comes from focusing energy on the wrong things. We try to control how others feel about us, whether the past “should have” happened, if we can influence the future, and whether uncertainty will ever turn into certainty. Because we can’t control these factors, we turn inward and conclude that the problem must be us.

So we try harder to “fix” ourselves. We tighten our grip. We overthink things. We attempt to perfect ourselves. We rehearse endless scenarios. We chase the illusion of a version of ourselves that would finally be safe from life’s challenges.

Epictetus suggests a more compassionate kind of effort: focus on what truly belongs to you—your judgments, your choices, and your responses.

He makes the point sharply in another famous line:

“Men are disturbed, not by things, but by the principles and notions which they form concerning things.”

This is where “fixing yourself” becomes wiser and simpler.

Not: “How do I become flawless?”

But: “What story am I telling about this moment—and is it true?” “Is it helpful?” “Is it mine?”

Rogers helps you stop attacking yourself in the name of growth. Epictetus helps you stop attacking yourself in the name of control.

Put them together, and you get a powerful formula for modern seekers:

1. Accept what is true inside you (Rogers).

2. Act where you actually have agency (Epictetus).

That’s real change: compassion plus responsibility.

Perennial Questions

• Where am I “fixing myself” as a way to avoid accepting something true about my life right now?

• What am I trying to control that isn’t actually up to me—and what is up to me in this situation?

• If I treated myself with honest acceptance today, what is one small, concrete action I would take next?

Final Thoughts

The goal isn’t to stop growing. It’s to stop growing through self-rejection.

Rogers reminds us that change begins when we stop fighting reality and start speaking the truth with kindness. Epictetus reminds us that peace comes from focusing our effort on what truly matters—our choices, our judgments, our next step.

So, yes, improve your life. But do it without contempt. Do it without inner conflict. Do it by reconnecting with reality—then moving forward from that point.

A Meditation on the “Present” of Christmas

Christmas invites us to reflect on gifts, but the most meaningful one is the hardest to give. It isn’t bought or wrapped; it has nothing to do with ribbons or receipts. The true “present” of Christmas is presence itself—the quiet courage to be here, fully, without rushing past your own life.

Before we offer anything to others, Christmas calls us to accept this moment as a gift. But that’s not usually how the season feels.

The roads are jammed, inboxes fill with sales and invitations, and there’s always one more thing to buy, one more event to attend. Outwardly, everything speeds up. Inwardly, many of us feel scattered and thin. Precisely here, in the busyness and noise, the Christmas season can become a school for the inner life.

In his Thoughts on the Theology of Christmas, the Jesuit priest and theologian Karl Rahner (1904–1984) wrote:

Have the courage to be alone. Only once you have really managed to do this, and have achieved it in a Christian way, can you hope to give the present of a heart filled with the Christmas spirit–in other words, a gently patient, courageously collected, softly tender heart–to those whom you are striving to love.

Rahner adds:

This present is indeed something you should place under the Christmas tree, otherwise all other presents will simply be an unnecessary expense which could be incurred at any time of the year. And so, for once, try to endure your own company for a while. Perhaps you can find a room where you can be alone. Or you may know a lonely walk or a quiet church.

Rahner turns our usual logic of Christmas upside down. We assume the best gifts are the ones we can wrap and hand to others. He suggests that the real gift is the kind of heart we carry into the room: gently patient, courageously collected, softly tender. You can’t purchase that heart or rush it into existence.

It is formed, slowly, in silence and solitude.

For many, the thought of being alone at Christmas feels like the opposite of what they long for. Solitude can sound like abandonment or proof that everyone else is living a more joyful life somewhere else.

But Rahner is not urging us to withdraw from the people we love. He is inviting us to step back just enough to become truly present to them. Without that inner gathering, we arrive at the table physically but remain scattered inside.

This is where a contemplative approach to Christmas begins.

Even as the world moves quickly, we can practice moving more slowly on the inside. That might look like sitting in a quiet room before everyone wakes up, taking a short walk after dinner, or slipping into a side pew of a nearly empty church. The point isn’t a dramatic spiritual experience; it’s simply coming back to where you already are.

Rahner continues:

Wait. Listen. You must not keep quiet in this way simply in order to be able to speak about it later on. You must enter into this silence in such a way as to be resolved never to leave it again, in so far as you really make the appeal to this silence and into this silent infinity your last word standing on its own account and not existing for the sake of anything else, something which no one else need hear apart from the one to whom it is really addressed.

So: Stop, be silent, wait.

We’re used to treating every experience as potential content—something to tell later, to post, to turn into a story. Rahner gently challenges that impulse.

Sit in this season’s silence, he says, not to collect material, but to offer yourself. Let some moments exist for no other reason than that they are real, shared only between you and God—or you and your own heart.

The French philosopher and historian Pierre Hadot explained that the ancient Greeks paid particular attention to the present moment. For them, being content with the present meant accepting their finite, earthly existence rather than forever chasing a different life. At the same time, learning to use the present meant recognizing each fleeting instant as decisive: this word, this gesture, this act of patience or restraint.

The “present” is the place where a life is actually chosen.

Seen this way, Christmas is more than just a date or a collection of traditions. It becomes a season to practice being present. Every long line at a store acts as a small lesson in patience. Every awkward family moment offers a chance to show tenderness. Every quiet night, when the house feels less full than before, becomes an opportunity to sit with your own heart rather than run from it.

Presence does not mean pretending everything is cheerful.

The holidays often bring grief and disappointment closer to the surface: empty chairs at the table, strained relationships, hopes that did not unfold as we imagined. Being “present” can mean feeling these things more intensely, not less. It might mean letting yourself cry in that quiet room Rahner describes, or lighting a candle for someone you miss.

Presence is not about keeping a festive mask in place; it’s about refusing to abandon yourself, even when what you find is pain.

This work rarely feels easy or “productive,” the seventeenth-century monk Brother Lawrence put it plainly:

Do not be discouraged by the resistance you will encounter from your human nature; you must go against your human inclinations. In the beginning, you will often think you are wasting time, but you must go on, be determined, and persevere until death, despite all the difficulties.

Brother Lawrence reminds us that a practice is less about immediate results and more about faithful return. The early stages feel unproductive precisely because our habits of distraction are so strong.

Practicing presence might feel like mere boredom. You may sit in silence and meet only restlessness. You may go on a “contemplative walk” and spend most of it replaying old conversations or planning the next thing.

That’s all right.

The goal is not a perfectly calm mind.

The practice is to return, again and again, to this breath, this step, this person—and to the One who meets you here. By persevering, we slowly create space for a quieter, steadier way of being to take root.

Perhaps this year you could give one additional gift, one that won’t show up in any wrapping paper: a heart that has spent a little time in silence.

You might choose one simple practice for the season:

• Ten minutes alone each day with a candle, noticing your breath and offering the day back to God.

• A daily walk without your phone, attending to the cold air, the lights in windows, the sounds around you.

• Or even a quiet pause before each gathering to say, “Help me be fully here,” and then to look—really look—at the faces in front of you.

Small practices, repeated, begin to reshape the way you inhabit your life.

The Christmas season is an opportunity to be where you are, not where you think you should be. It’s a chance to practice what you’ve learned, to resist constant distraction, and to live—if only for a few moments at a time—in the present.

So as the days fill up, you might gently ask yourself:

• How do I want to live this Christmas season?

• What principles and practices do I want to embody?

Most importantly, consider whether you will accept Rahner’s invitation and Brother Lawrence’s challenge—to “stop, be silent, wait,” and repeatedly return, patiently, to the only place where your life truly happens: this “present” moment.

Sinner and Saint: The Paradox of Human Development

Before we begin, it may help to name the kind of territory we’re entering—because this essay (or episode) is all about paradoxes and polarities.

A paradox is two things that seem to oppose each other but are both true. Similarly, a polarity is a pair of truths that don’t cancel each other out—they balance each other.

You experience this every day. You can want independence and connection at the same time. You can feel confident in one moment and insecure in the next. You can love someone deeply and still feel frustrated by them.

Wisdom traditions say this is not a mistake. This is what being human feels like.

The Zen tradition captures the sentiment beautifully in a single line:

“You are perfect just as you are… and you could use a little improvement.”

At first, it sounds impossible.

But it points to something essential:

• You are whole—and you’re still becoming.

• You are worthy—and you’re unfinished.

• You have goodness in you—and you have a shadow too.

Paradox isn’t a problem to solve.

It’s a tension to live in.

And this is the doorway into today’s episode: the deeper paradox that Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn pointed to when he said the line between good and evil doesn’t run between groups, but straight through every human heart.

Understanding that paradox and learning to hold it may be a crucial step toward becoming wiser.

The following is a transcript from “Sinner and Saint: The Paradox of Human Development” on the Perennial Wisdom podcast (Ep. 256).

It’s easy to believe the world is divided into two kinds of people when you’re warm, well-fed, and far from consequences.

It’s harder to believe it in a labor camp. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn—a Russian novelist and dissident who survived the Soviet prison camp system—learned what a human being is when the human being is reduced: when the day is measured in hunger and humiliation, when the air itself feels like an accusation, when fear becomes a kind of weather. In that place, where the system tried to erase the soul, he discovered a truth about it.

We crave simple moral maps.

We want the clean relief of “good people” and “bad people.”

But the real border isn’t out there.

It’s inside.

“The line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either—but right through every human heart.”
— Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago

The idea doesn’t comfort.

It corrects.

It steals a pleasure from us—the pleasure of innocence, of projecting evil onto strangers, of imagining we are the exception. But it gives something back: a realism that makes repentance possible. If the line runs through every heart, then no one is pure enough to stop examining themselves.

And no one is ruined enough to stop hoping.

This is the paradox at the heart of the human condition: each of us is both sinner and saint. Not in alternating seasons, as if we can time the darkness. But simultaneously—like two currents in the same river.

And the paradox matters now because we live in an age that treats contradiction like a defect. We want identities that feel sealed. We want tribes that feel righteous. We want certainty that never trembles. But wisdom traditions—philosophical, spiritual, and even psychological—suggest that adulthood is the capacity to hold opposing truths without turning them into denial or self-hatred.

1. The Sinner

If the border runs through every heart, then no one gets to be a single story.

Not the visibly “good” person who quietly covets. Not the disciplined person whose discipline hides resentment. Not the helper who still needs to be seen as the helper. Not the wounded person who wounds back.

And not even the person who has done grave harm yet still—somewhere beneath the wreckage—can feel remorse like a small light under a door.

The Apostle St. Paul—a first-century Jewish teacher and early Christian missionary whose letters shaped the moral imagination of the West—sounds less like a theologian than a person whispering the truth after losing the energy to perform:

“I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate… I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out… Wretched man that I am!”
— Romans 7:15–25

He describes the strange experience of wanting goodness with sincerity and still discovering another will inside—an undertow, a reflex, an appetite for the old cheap victories. The torment is not ignorance. It is division.

The Greek philosopher Plato tried to map the soul as carefully as he mapped the city, giving this division a mythic form: the soul as a charioteer pulled by two horses—one that strains upward, one that lunges to the side. It’s a picture of what we know privately: we can mean well and still sabotage; we can love and still manipulate; we can seek truth and still crave to be right.

St. Augustine—a late–Roman-era thinker whose spiritual autobiography remains one of the great studies of desire and self-deception—makes the division tender. The heart wants joy, rest, communion—but reaches for substitutes, then wonders why it stays thirsty.

“Our heart is restless until it rests in You.”
— Augustine, Confessions

Restlessness reveals itself: we were created for more than what we settle for. Even our sins can be misdirected prayers—desire aimed at the wrong target.

This is the sinner’s truth—not that we are cartoon villains, but that we are internally mixed. The line is not simply a moral boundary; it is a daily reality.

And this truth rescues us from two familiar collapses.

One is perfectionism, the belief that goodness means never struggling.
The other is despair, the belief that struggle means you are nothing but brokenness.

The paradox refuses both. It says: you are capable of both harm and holiness. So you must be humble—and you must not give up.

2. The Saint

Most people don’t ruin their lives because they’ve never encountered virtue. They ruin their lives because they couldn’t bear their own complexity.

They tried to become a pure story.

Some choose the story of sainthood: spotless, defended, brittle. Some choose the story of sin: resigned, sarcastic, trapped. Both are evasions. Both are ways of refusing the hard, interior work of integration.

So let’s name what “saint” means here. Not a person without conflict. Not a person without shadow. But a person becoming whole—someone learning to tell the truth about themselves without collapsing, and learning to aim their desire toward what is worthy.

Solzhenitsyn’s border is not a fence you walk past once. It’s a moving line. It shifts with what you feed. A person can be hardened by a thousand small permissions. A person can soften by a thousand small repairs.

St. Thomas Aquinas—a 13th-century theologian who described virtue with remarkable precision—offers a gentle realism that steadies the whole project:

“Grace does not destroy nature, but perfects it.”

Grace, at its best, is not spiritual paint over a cracked wall. It is healing. Ordering. Training desire until it can carry love without distortion.

Similarly, the Swiss psychologist Carl Jung warned that what we deny in ourselves doesn’t die; it goes underground—highlighting the danger of refusing this work. What you deny in yourself doesn’t simply disappear. It becomes a shadow—unseen, unacknowledged, and therefore more dangerous. The unacknowledged darkness doesn’t make you pure; it makes you blind.

This is why confession, examination, repentance, and forgiveness recur across traditions. They are not rituals of humiliation. They are practices of truth. They keep the saint from arrogance and the sinner from despair.

A saint who forgets they can fall risks becoming cruel in their certainty. Similarly, a sinner who forgets they can rise may become loyal to their chains.

Holding the paradox is not moral vagueness. It is moral strength: clear-eyed standards, honest self-knowledge, and the refusal to turn anyone—including yourself—into a parody.

3. The Scapegoat

Solzhenitsyn’s insight is personal, but it is not private. If the line between good and evil runs through every heart, then the most dangerous act is pretending it doesn’t—especially when we gather into a crowd.

This is where René Girard—a 20th-century French thinker who studied imitation, rivalry, and the scapegoat mechanism—makes the paradox sharper and darker.

Girard argued that communities often manage tension by finding someone—an individual or a group—who can carry the blame. When fear rises, when rivalry intensifies, when a society feels threatened or ashamed, it searches for relief.

And relief is easiest when it is simple: someone must be responsible.

So the community concentrates its anxiety onto a scapegoat. The scapegoat becomes the explanation for what feels chaotic and humiliating. And once a person or group is assigned that role, something intoxicating happens: the community experiences a rush of unity. The “we” becomes clearer because the “they” has been named.

Scapegoating is a shortcut to innocence. It is moral coherence without self-examination.

It is also the social version of the inner evasion St. Paul describes. Instead of facing the divided self—my mixed motives, my capacity for harm, my appetite for self-deception—we export the conflict. We make the darkness belong somewhere else. And as soon as evil is safely located outside the heart, the conscience relaxes. Contempt becomes easier. Cruelty can feel like virtue.

The genius—and tragedy—of scapegoating is that it often comes dressed in righteousness. It claims to defend the good. It speaks the language of justice. But beneath the slogans, it is often the oldest temptation: to live as saints by declaring someone else the sinner.

Girard’s insight also reframes Solzhenitsyn’s warning. If we ignore the line within, we don’t become pure. We become dangerous. Because the human need for moral clarity doesn’t disappear—it migrates outward.

What we refuse to confront internally, we hunt for externally.

This is why the sinner/saint paradox is more than a spiritual teaching. It is a philosophical discipline. It trains us to resist the ancient pressure of groups: the urge to secure unity through blame.

To hold the paradox is to say:

• “I can identify wrongdoing without reducing a person to their worst actions.”

• “I can seek justice without claiming my side is innocent.”

• “I can stand against harm without needing a scapegoat to feel pure.”

As one might expect, holding the paradox is more difficult.

4. The Integrated Self

Here is the modern problem: our culture is training us out of paradox.

We are rewarded for certainty, outrage, and clear enemies and selves. We are encouraged to declare, perform, and condemn—often faster than we can think.

You can feel it: the rush of righteousness, the thrill of dismissal, the relief of being on the “right side.” It’s a kind of intoxication. And like most intoxicants, it comes with a cost: you stop examining yourself. You stop seeing the human being in front of you. You forget that the line runs through you too.

If Girard explains the social pressure to flee paradox—unity through blame—Robert Kegan helps explain the inner development required to resist it.

Kegan—a Harvard developmental psychologist known for studying how adults grow in complexity—argues that adulthood is not just about gaining information; it involves transforming the way we create meaning. Early meaning-making often combines identity with belonging: good is what “we” approve, and evil is what threatens “us.”

Contradiction feels dangerous because it risks exile. In that mode, a scapegoat is not merely convenient—it feels necessary. Complexity threatens coherence, and coherence can feel like survival.

But growth can lead to a self-authored stance—an internal compass that can withstand disapproval, accept failure without falling apart, and manage complexity without panic. And beyond that, a rarer skill: recognizing your own frameworks as partial, remaining open to correction, and holding opposing values without turning one into a weapon.

In simple terms: A less integrated self needs the world to be clear-cut—saints over here, sinners over there. A more integrated self can whisper: the line runs through me—and that makes me cautious. Not cautious in my beliefs. Careful in judgment. Careful with power. Careful with contempt.

In a culture hooked on certainty and outrage, integration is sobriety. And sobriety has practical consequences.

It teaches us to say:

• I can seek justice without claiming perfection.

• I can repent without falling into shame.

• I can forgive without becoming naive.

This marks the true moral stage of adulthood, and increasingly, it also indicates the presence of moral wisdom.

Final Thoughts

We are living through a crisis of moral imagination.

Not because people don’t care about good and evil—but because we have grown addicted to simple versions of them. We want purity without confession, righteousness without humility, justice without self-examination. And so we keep offering the world scapegoats, as if blame could wash us clean.

Solzhenitsyn rejects that fantasy. “The line runs through you” acts as a safeguard. It is the inner discipline that makes individuals wiser and communities more just.

But it’s important to remember that the integrated self isn't someone who never makes mistakes. It's someone who can admit it, learn from it, and move on—without falling into shame or becoming hypocritical.

And maybe the clearest sign of wisdom is this: when tension rises, and a scapegoat appears, you can pause and remember where the line actually is.

Today, we’re exploring a question that never leaves us alone.

What does it actually mean to be happy?

We use the word constantly. We chase it through comfort, success, relationships, productivity, and even pleasure. We organize entire lives around the promise that if we arrange the right conditions… then, finally, we will be happy.

And yet happiness is strangely hard to find.

We have more comfort, more choice, more stimulation than any generation in history. And still anxiety rises. Burnout spreads. And quiet feels unfamiliar.

Seven hundred years ago, long before therapy podcasts or dopamine research,
St. Thomas Aquinas saw this pattern with astonishing clarity.

He explained that our suffering would not mainly stem from pain, but from a fundamental error: directing our desire toward things that are too insignificant to fulfill it.

For Aquinas, happiness is not a mood, not a feeling, and not a moment of pleasure. It is the final end of human life—the deepest orientation of the soul toward what it was made for.

1. False Happiness

Aquinas begins in a way that feels surprisingly modern. Before he tells us what happiness is, he dismantles what we repeatedly mistake for it.

He looks one by one at the candidates we still worship today:

• Money.

• Status.

• Power.

• Pleasure.

And one by one, he says: “No.”

Not because these things are bad—but because they are too small.

He writes:

“It is impossible for man’s happiness to consist in wealth, because wealth is sought for the sake of something else. And happiness is supposed to be the last end.” — Summa Theologiae

Money always points beyond itself. We never want money just for money. We want what we think it can give us—security, comfort, freedom, control.

Honor fails because it depends on other people’s opinions. Power fails because it magnifies disorder as easily as goodness. Fame fails because it rests on misunderstanding. Pleasure fails because it fades almost as soon as it arrives.

Even knowledge fails—not because it is too high—but because it is never complete.

Then Aquinas presents one of the most powerful statements in philosophy:

“It is impossible for any created good to constitute man’s happiness. For happiness must completely satisfy desire. Otherwise, it would not be the final end.”

Here is the principle that unravels so much modern confusion: If something leaves you still searching, it cannot be your happiness.

We feel this empirically now. Psychology calls it the hedonic treadmill.

Pleasure adapts.

Success normalizes.

And almost immediately, desire resets.

Aquinas concludes: Finite things cannot satisfy infinite longing.

2. The Structure of Desire

Why do we keep reaching for the wrong things? Because our desire itself is misunderstood.

Aquinas says something quietly radical: the will is naturally ordered toward happiness as its final end. We are not wrong to want happiness. We are wrong about where we think it lives.

He writes:

“Man’s will tends naturally toward happiness as its last end—but it may err in the choice of means.”

In other words, we don’t want too much. We want it from the wrong places.

Every disappointment teaches the same lesson. Every pleasure fades. Every achievement falls short of calming the heart. And no relationship can bear the weight we place on it.

We are not shallow because we desire deeply. We are restless because we desire infinitely.

That leads Aquinas to his central claim:

“Final and perfect happiness can consist in nothing else than the vision of the Divine Essence.”

For Aquinas, happiness is not something you own.

It is something you behold.

The intellect comes to rest not in a thing, but in Truth itself. The will comes to rest not in stimulation, but in Goodness without limit.

He continues:

“In that vision, the intellect attains to the very substance of God, and the will rests in perfect delight.”

Happiness here is not excitement.

It is rest after a long exile.

It's not about suppressing desire—rather, it's about realizing what that desire has been secretly longing for all along. Josef Pieper, the great modern interpreter of Aquinas, puts this into language we can feel:

“Happiness is not found in hectic grasping, but in contemplative knowing. It is not achieved by doing more, but by seeing more deeply.”

We believe happiness will arrive when we finally control enough, accomplish enough, and secure enough.

3. The Architecture of Joy

If perfect happiness lies beyond this life, does that mean we are condemned to frustration here? Not at all.

Aquinas makes a beautiful distinction: There is perfect happiness—the full vision of God. And there is imperfect happiness—the ordered life of virtue now.

Imperfect happiness does not lie in owning the right things. It lies in being rightly ordered within.

He writes:

“Man’s imperfect happiness consists in an operation of the intellect according to the moral and intellectual virtues.”

Virtue is not moral stubbornness.

It is integration.

It brings the fragmented self into unity. Reason learns to see clearly. The will learns to choose wisely. Desire learns it won’t betray itself.

This is why Aquinas refuses to call pleasure happiness:

“Bodily pleasure cannot be man’s happiness, because it belongs to the senses, whereas happiness belongs to the intellect.”

Pleasure is not evil. It is just not sovereign. It follows happiness. It does not create it.

Pieper expresses his point with complete simplicity:

“At bottom, happiness is the serene assent to reality.”

Sin promises joy without order. Virtue offers order that quietly gives rise to joy. Where sin fragments the soul, virtue unifies it. And for Aquinas, unity is already a form of happiness.

One of the quiet miracles of the Christian tradition is how often the saints speak of joy without frenzy. Aquinas helps us understand why.

Their happiness is not rooted in control, comfort, success, or escape. It is rooted in participation. They no longer demand that finite goods carry infinite meaning.

• We, on the other hand, ask our careers to save us.

• We ask romance to complete us.

• We ask productivity to justify us.

• We ask for pleasure to calm us.

And when these collapse under the weight of those expectations, we usually don’t question our aim. We double our effort.

Aquinas would remind us: The real work of happiness is not building a better ladder. It is making sure the ladder is leaning against the right wall.

The Practice

If we had to summarize Aquinas’ entire view of happiness in three lines, it would be this:

• (1) No created thing is large enough to be the final end of a human life.

• (2) The human heart is ordered toward what is infinite.

• (3) Virtue is the discipline that begins aligning us with that truth even now.

Or even more simply: You cannot be satisfied by what you were not created for.

Modern happiness is loud. The saint’s guide to happiness is quiet. It rests. It receives. It consents to reality rather than trying to conquer it.

One tries to master the world.

The other tries to be rightly ordered within it.

And only one actually brings happiness. In this world, and beyond

Boredom.

That vague restlessness in the waiting room.

That itch to reach for your phone at a red light.

We live in a world almost allergic to boredom. At the smallest pause, we grab a screen. At the slightest silence, we search for noise.

We think we’re just “passing time.” But most of the time, we’re actually doing something much deeper. We are running away from ourselves.

The strange thing is the wisest voices across history—philosophers, monks, and even modern writers—have all suggested the opposite. That boredom is not a sign that something is wrong.

It might be the moment something finally can go right.

So, in this essay, let us explore an old idea in a new way: boredom not as an absence of meaning. Rather, the condition in which meaning begins to reveal itself.

1. The Desert

Every spiritual tradition has a desert. The Israelites wandered in one for forty years. The Desert Fathers went into one on purpose.

Pascal, the French philosopher and Christian thinker, said the real desert is simply a room where you sit alone… with no distractions. And David Foster Wallace, the modern novelist, believed boredom is the new desert: fluorescently lit offices, checkout lines, traffic, the quiet places in our day we desperately try to escape.

The desert is where the distractions fall away and only the self remains.

That’s what boredom really is. When the music stops, when the notification pings slow down, when nothing new is happening… the desert begins to appear.

And like every desert in the old stories—it’s not just empty.

It’s dangerous, yes… but it’s also holy.

It’s where people encounter God, or truth, or themselves.

Blaise Pascal has this famous line:

“All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone.”

He didn’t mean that as a cute quote for Instagram. He meant it as a diagnosis. He believed our inability to tolerate boredom is not a minor weakness—it’s one of our deepest spiritual problems.

He also wrote:

“We run heedlessly into the abyss after putting something in front of us to stop us from seeing it.”

Think about that.

We run toward the cliff, holding up our phones, our work, our busyness, just so we don’t have to look down.

Boredom is the moment you run out of “something in front of you.”

And suddenly… you see.

2. The Diagnosis

Let’s go back to the ancient world for a moment.

Socrates was known for talking—asking hard questions, challenging people in the marketplace. But he also learned how to be still.

Plato tells a story in the Symposium where Socrates stops, stands in place, and remains there—silent—for hours. Another time, he stands motionless from one sunrise to the next, lost in reflection.

Socrates understood: stopping is the beginning of seeing.

You can’t examine your life if you never stop long enough to look at it.

The Stoics arrived at a similar conclusion. Seneca wrote:

“The mind which is constantly in motion finds rest intolerable.”

To the Stoics, that wasn’t just an observation. It was a warning. If you can’t tolerate rest, you’re not free. You’re being dragged by your impulses.

Epictetus said that freedom begins with self-mastery. If you can’t sit quietly for a few minutes without needing to be entertained or stimulated, then your attention is not really your own.

Then came the Christian monks in the Egyptian desert—the early monastics known as the Desert Fathers and Mothers. They left the cities and went into literal wilderness, trying to meet God in silence and solitude.

And there they discovered a new kind of suffering.

After the initial spiritual excitement wore off, they were attacked by what one of them, Evagrius Ponticus, called the “noonday demon”—what later writers would call acedia.

It felt like boredom, restlessness, disgust with the place they were in, hatred of the monotony, a desperate urge to leave their cell and “go anywhere else.”

What did the elders tell them?

Not, “Go distract yourself.” Not, “You need a change of scenery.”

They said:

“Stay in your cell, and your cell will teach you everything.”

In other words: Stay in the desert long enough… and the desert will begin to speak.

3. The Discovery

Fast forward to today. We have brain scanners, lab studies, and big data. And modern psychology is starting to confirm what the ancients suspected.

When you’re not actively focused on a task… and you’re not being flooded with stimulation… the brain switches into what neuroscientists call the default mode network.

That’s the network that handles:

• memory integration

• reflection

• emotional processing

• long-term planning

• creativity

• and even your sense of self

Most of the deep, connective, “big picture” work your mind does—it does when you appear to be “doing nothing.” That’s why ideas pop up in the shower, or on a walk, or when you’re doing some mindless task.

Boredom is not a shutdown. It’s a reconfiguration.

In a modern psychological study, one group of participants performed a tedious or boring task—copying numbers from a phone book—before engaging in a creative activity. The other group skipped the boring task.

The result? The bored group came up with more original ideas.

Boredom cleared the mental field.

It made space.

Another study from the University of Virginia asked people to sit alone in a room for 15 minutes, with nothing to do but think. If they wanted, they could also press a button that delivered an electric shock.

A surprising number of people—especially men—chose the shock, rather than just sitting with their thoughts.

4. The Prophets

For Blaise Pascal, the French philosopher and mathematician, boredom wasn’t trivial. He believed our inability to tolerate boredom was tied to our difficulty facing reality—our mortality, our limits, and our dependence on God.

He said we fill our lives with what he called divertissement—diversion, entertainment, busyness—to avoid these deeper questions.

Pascal noted:

“The only thing that consoles us for our miseries is diversion. And yet that is the greatest of our miseries, because it prevents us from thinking about ourselves and leads imperceptibly to our ruin.”

In modern terms, boredom is the moment when the distractions fade away. And if we can stay with it—on the other side of that discomfort is honesty. Pascal is tough on us, but he’s not cruel. He’s trying to push us into a kind of courage. The courage to sit in the room. The courage to walk into the desert of boredom and not immediately run back out.

All these insights are well aligned with David Foster Wallace's perspective. Wallace saw boredom not merely as a psychological condition but as a moral and spiritual challenge posed by modern life.

His unfinished novel, The Pale King, is set in an IRS tax office—one of the most soul-numbing environments you can imagine. He uses that setting to ask what happens to a human soul in the face of extreme monotony.

At one point, he writes:

“If you are immune to boredom, there is literally nothing you cannot accomplish.”

He doesn’t mean that you never feel bored.

He means if you can endure boredom without fleeing—if you can remain present in it—then you have a kind of inner strength most of us lack.

In his famous commencement address, This Is Water, Wallace says something crucial about freedom:

“The really important kind of freedom involves attention, and awareness, and discipline… It is being able truly to care about other people, and to sacrifice for them, over and over, in myriad petty little unsexy ways, every day.”

Think about that in the context of boredom.

Most acts of love are rather boring:

• Listening to a child ramble.

• Showing up for a friend—again.

• Doing the dishes.

• Answering emails.

• Sitting through a meeting.

If we cannot tolerate boredom, we cannot tolerate the reality of ordinary life. And if we cannot tolerate ordinary life, we cannot really love the people who live in it.

For thinkers like Wallace and Pascal, boredom isn’t the enemy. It’s the training ground for real attention. And attention is where freedom and love begin.

5. The Practice

You don’t have to go to Egypt to enter the desert. You don’t need a cave or a monastery.

The desert appears every time there’s a pause and you decide not to flee.

• The red light...

• The waiting room…

• The walk...

These are small deserts.

Opportunities.

Doorways.

Being bored is like being asked a question:

Can you endure yourself long enough to become who you are?

The art of boredom is nothing less than the art of being human—and being here.

Right where you are.

There is a kind of thinking that happens on the surface of life—reactive, anxious, hurried. And then there is another kind of thinking, deeper and quieter, where the soul begins to speak.

Socrates called it an examination.

St. Augustine called it inwardness.

Both called it a necessity for a life of truth.

This meditation is an invitation to descend—to move from noise to knowledge, from distraction to discernment.

1. Socrates and the Courage to Question

Imagine waking up one morning and realizing that most of your thoughts aren’t actually yours. They’re borrowed—absorbed from headlines, inherited from family, echoed from friends, and shaped by algorithms.

We scroll, we react, we repeat…

But do we think? That is the question.

Long before smartphones and noise, Socrates, in the streets of Athens, warned us about this danger. He insisted that freedom—real freedom—begins when we learn to think for ourselves.

Socrates, barefoot in the marketplace, asked the questions everyone else avoided. “What is justice?” “What is virtue?” “What is good?”

But he didn’t teach answers—he taught inquiry. His wisdom started with a humble admission: “All that I know is that I know nothing.”

His confession was not despair but liberation. For Socrates, to think was to awaken—to strip away illusion until only what is real remains.

When accused of corrupting the youth and sentenced to death, he did not retreat.

He told his accusers:

A man who is good for anything ought not to calculate the chance of living or dying; he ought only to consider whether in doing anything he is doing right or wrong. — Plato, Apology

Philosophy, for Socrates, was not about cleverness. It was about conscience—the daily practice of aligning one’s reason with what is just.

2. St. Augustine and the Journey Within

Centuries later, during a time when Rome was collapsing, another restless mind responded to the same call—but turned it inward. St. Augustine picked up where Socrates left off: recognizing that truth must be sought, but that the search leads not outward, but inward.

In his Confessions, he stressed,

And men go abroad to admire the heights of mountains, the mighty waves of the sea, the broad tides of rivers, the compass of the ocean, and the circuits of the stars, yet pass over the mystery of themselves without a thought.

St. Augustine’s life was a whirl of desire, doubt, and ambition. He studied the philosophies of his time, mastered rhetoric, and tasted every pleasure—and yet, he remained restless.

“Our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee,” he wrote.

The American philosopher James Miller described it this way in Examined Lives,

The quest for wisdom can be wayward, and a wise man cannot live by reason alone. These are two of the morals that one might draw from Augustine’s own account of the first half of his life in his Confessions. … In the story he tells in the Confessions, Augustine was forever trying to find the truth, the one and only way of life that might make a man perfectly happy.

St. Augustine came to realize that thinking was not just an abstraction; it was an act of confession. It involved confronting not only ideas but also motives, not only truth but self-deception.

He stressed:

Do not go outward; return within yourself. In the inward man dwells truth. And if you find that your nature is changeable, transcend yourself.

To think for yourself, St. Augustine believed, is to wake up to the light within—to discover that the act of attention is itself a form of prayer.

3. The Rhetoric of Freedom

To think for yourself is to engage in this inner rhetoric—the dialogue between belief and evidence, between passion and conscience.

Aristotle called it logos, the reasoned order that brings harmony between word and world. Jay Heinrichs, in his new book Aristotle’s Guide to Self-Persuasion, puts it this way:

Aristotle argued that any significant change in our lives, bad or good, constitutes a soul test. Bad news, good news: Stuff happens. Your response determines what kind of soul you have, and how much you live up to that soul.

Heinrichs continues,

Aristotle wrote that the secret of the good life, the happiest life, is to be as human as humanly possible. This meant aligning oneself with one’s noble and virtuous soul. … That is how we free ourselves from fears, lack of motivation, and bad habits. And our masterful use of words—with ourselves as well as with one another—leads to self-mastery.

Before we can persuade others, we must learn to persuade ourselves—not with slogans, but with sincerity; not with emotion, but with evidence. Aristotle emphasized that the challenge was not one of vanity, but of virtue.

The Modern Challenge

Thinking for yourself in the twenty-first century doesn’t mean escaping society—it means seeing through it. It means pausing before you repost. It means questioning what outrages you and asking why. It means trusting your conscience more than your feed.

Algorithms amplify what flatters us.

Philosophy asks what humbles us.

Socrates cautioned Athens about the crowd's susceptibility to deception. St. Augustine warned Christendom that the self is easily fooled.

Both were right—and both called us back to humility, the ground of freedom.

4. The Art of Inner Freedom

For both thinkers, the mind is not a machine—it is a mirror of the soul. Socrates turned reason into a moral act. St. Augustine turned confession into an act of truth.

In The Inner Experience, American Trappist monk Thomas Merton echoed this sentiment when he wrote:

Penetration into the depths of our being is, then, a matter of liberation from the ordinary flow of conscious and half-conscious sense impressions, but also and more definitely from the unconscious drives and the clamoring of inordinate passion.

Merton adds,

Freedom to enter the inner sanctuary of our being is denied to those who are held back by dependence on self-gratification and sense satisfaction, whether it be a matter of pleasure seeking, love of comfort, or proneness to anger, self-assertion, pride, vanity, greed, and all the rest.

Thinking for yourself involves resisting that temptation—transcending borrowed beliefs, avoiding our lower desires, and overcoming fear.

It is not rebellion but reverence.

For Socrates, being free meant being guided by the best part of ourselves. When the rational part leads, and the spirited and pleasure-seeking senses follow, a person is in control of himself rather than a slave to his desires. This harmony is justice within the soul—and this harmony is freedom.

Final Thoughts

Between Socrates and St. Augustine lies the story of human freedom. One taught us how to question; the other taught us how to listen. Both believed that truth is not a possession but a presence—something we enter, not something we own.

Toward the end of his Confessions, St Augustine observed,

I have loved You late, O Beauty that is always old and always new. You were within me, but I was outside, searching for You.

It’s important to remember that thinking for yourself doesn’t mean walking alone—it means walking consciously, aware of the divine reason that animates everything.

Ultimately, thinking for yourself isn’t about rebellion; it’s about respecting who you are. When you trust (and train) your own mind, you’re celebrating your true self and the wisdom inside you.

Today, we’re examining one of the most misunderstood thinkers in Western philosophy—Arthur Schopenhauer, this nineteenth-century philosopher is often referred to as the poet of pessimism, yet surprisingly, he is also a teacher of compassion.

He famously wrote lines like this,

Life swings like a pendulum backward and forward between pain and boredom.

It sounds bleak, doesn’t it?

Yet, even in this darkness, there is a glimmer of light—a unique, sobering form of freedom.

Schopenhauer urges us not to avoid suffering but to understand it. To accept life as it is. To live not as optimists or nihilists but as individuals who recognize and love what is true.

1. The Vision of the Pessimist

Schopenhauer was born in 1788 into a world of revolution, reason, and Romanticism. While others spoke of progress, he spoke of pain. He saw in nature not harmony, but hunger — a restless energy he called the Will.

The Will, he said, is the force behind everything that lives. It drives the animal to hunt, the artist to create, the lover to pursue, and the human heart to want more than it can ever hold. And that — he believed — is the root of our suffering.

In The World as Will and Representation, Schopenhauer put it this way,

All striving springs from want or deficiency, from dissatisfaction with one’s condition… but no satisfaction is lasting; it is merely the starting point of a new striving. …

He added,

We see the whole course of human existence as nothing but a continual struggle for existence itself, with the certainty of losing it in the end. The life of every individual, if we survey it as a whole, and in general, is really a tragedy; but gone through in detail, it has the character of a comedy.

He saw it everywhere—in the animal kingdom, in desire, in love, in art. Each moment of joy, fleeting. Each victory, shadowed by the next longing.

His insight is confirmed by modern psychology: We refer to it as the “hedonic treadmill”—the relentless return to baseline after every achievement.

No matter how much we acquire, we remain wanting.

But Schopenhauer wasn’t trying to depress us. He was trying to wake us up. For when we stop expecting life to be what it isn’t, we can finally meet it as it is. And from that clarity, interestingly, comes compassion.

2. The Compassionate Pessimist

Schopenhauer’s pessimism is not cruelty. It’s tenderness. “The direct knowledge of another’s suffering leads us to go to his aid,” he insisted, “this is the great mystery of ethics.”

For Schopenhauer, compassion, or “feeling-with,” is the only true morality. When we see clearly that all beings suffer from the same restless will, we can no longer treat others as mere means to our ends.

We recognize ourselves in their pain.

He suggested,

The compassion that springs from this knowledge is the source of all real justice and loving-kindness. He who feels compassion sees through the veil of Maya; he perceives that the difference between himself and others is merely apparent.

This insight connects Schopenhauer with the East—specifically with Buddhism, which he studied in depth. He believed that the veil of separation blinds us from our shared essence.

To pierce the veil is to realize our unity.

A similar concept appears in Compassion-Focused Therapy, where Dr. Paul Gilbert defines compassion as “the courageous awareness of suffering and the commitment to alleviate it.” This form of courage begins with clear perception—willingness to face life’s pain without denial—and persists in love despite it.

Pessimism, then, is not the rejection of life. It is love refined by truth. “The person who is truly noble recognizes the suffering of all beings as his own,” stressed Schopenhauer.

3. The Aesthetic Escape

Schopenhauer found moments of peace not in pleasure, but in beauty. He called art “the pure contemplation of the world as representation,” a moment in which the self dissolves and the Will falls silent.

Schopenhauer believed,

In the moment of aesthetic contemplation, the will vanishes. We are no longer individuals, but pure, will-less subjects of knowledge. — The World as Will and Representation

When we lose ourselves in music, in a landscape, in the curve of a sculpture or a melody, we are, for an instant, free.

Desire fades.

The self quiets.

There is only awareness.

Similarly, Nietzsche, who both adored and challenged him, described music as “the great bridge to the truth of existence.” Contemporary neuroscience also demonstrates that art can truly break down the boundaries of the self by reducing activity in the brain’s “default mode network,” which is responsible for ego and self-related rumination.

When we gaze upon beauty without wanting, Schopenhauer says, we participate in eternity. It is not escape—it is revelation. We discover that even in a suffering world, peace is possible.

To live as Schopenhauer teaches is not to withdraw in despair, but to embrace life without illusion.

He writes:

The greatest wisdom is to make the enjoyment of the present the supreme object of life. — Essays and Aphorisms

That’s his secret: Stop asking life for more than it can give. Stop demanding meaning from chaos. Find beauty in small mercies—a quiet morning, a kind face, the scent of rain on stone.

To expect suffering is not to surrender to it, but to meet it without fear. To live without illusion is to live without bitterness. This, Schopenhauer believed, is the highest freedom.

When we no longer fight what is inevitable, we can finally act with clarity and compassion. In this sense, his pessimism is deeply ethical—even spiritual.

He admired the saints and ascetics who lived simply, without hatred, without want. He saw in their renunciation not denial, but love. He insisted that “the wise man does not expect the world to be other than it is.”

This is not hopelessness.

It’s humility.

Final Thoughts

To practice the art of pessimism is to see clearly, feel deeply, and live gently. It is about understanding, as Schopenhauer did, that peace is not the absence of pain but the absence of illusion. That compassion is not weakness but wisdom.

That joy, when it arrives, is not a reward but a grace.

Nietzsche once accused him of denying life. But maybe Schopenhauer wasn’t denying it—maybe he was defending it from our fantasies of control and conquest.

Schopenhauer reminds us:

Every being suffers.

Every joy fades.

And yet—the world remains mysteriously beautiful.

The point here is that pessimism, rightly understood, is not despair. It is honesty with love still intact.

As Schopenhauer put it,

The more clearly one sees the world’s suffering, the less one is likely to seek one’s happiness in it.

So let us live not as optimists, expecting perfection—nor as nihilists, denying meaning—but as gentle pessimists: awake, compassionate, and free.

If Schopenhauer were here to pose a question, it might be: What does it mean to observe the world as it is—and still affirm life?

That, Schopenhauer would consider, is true wisdom. It involves suffering knowingly, loving without illusions, and finding serenity even when the pendulum swings.

Close your eyes for a moment.

Imagine yourself standing before two roads—one leading to pleasure and freedom, the other to duty and devotion.

You pause, aware that whichever option you pick, the other will be lost forever.

Søren Kierkegaard, the 19th-century Danish philosopher, often considered the father of existentialism, begins his classic Either/Or here, with a human being suspended between possibility and responsibility.

We aim to keep all options available, but as time goes on, it becomes increasingly difficult for us to bear the wait.

Do it or do not do it—you will regret both, says Kierkegaard.
— Either/Or

He isn’t mocking us; he's depicting modern life—long before terms like “decision fatigue” and “the paradox of choice” were introduced.

We live in a world of seemingly infinite options—endless career choices, relationships, and distractions. The modern self, like Kierkegaard’s “aesthete,” wants to feel everything, do everything, be everything.

But this hunger for experience can become its own kind of despair.

Boredom is the root of all evil, Kierkegaard insists, the despairing refusal to be oneself. — Either/Or

The aesthete doesn’t live in the moment—he hides in it. He seeks pleasure not to feel alive, but to forget that he doesn’t know who he is. And the more we run from that question, the more anxious we become.

Modern psychology agrees: research on the paradox of choice shows that having too many options makes us restless and unsatisfied.

Freedom without direction becomes its own prison. True freedom, at least according to Kierkegaard, begins when we dare to choose.

1. The Weight of Responsibility

At some point, possibility becomes unbearable. The self can’t float forever. It must take form.

This is the shift from the aesthetic life to the ethical life.

In the second half of Either/Or, Kierkegaard introduces “Judge William,” a married man who writes to the restless youth. He says, “Stop chasing experiences. Start living as a whole person.”

Kierkegaard puts it this way,

To choose oneself is to choose the ethical.
— Either/Or

To choose is to bind oneself to marriage, to work, to something that gives structure to freedom.

As the existential psychologist Rollo May wrote:

Freedom is not the absence of constraints but the presence of purpose.
— The Discovery of Being

May noted,

Kierkegaard defines freedom as possibility. … He sees man as the creature who is continually beckoned by possibility, who conceives of possibility, visualizes it, and by creative activity carries it into actuality.

Interestingly, recent research backs this up. Psychologists such as Angela Duckworth and Viktor Frankl have demonstrated that meaning arises not from constant change, but from an ongoing commitment to love and vocation.

But sustained commitment is hard. Every choice involves renunciation. Every “yes” contains a thousand “no’s.”

And so the ethical life introduces its own kind of anxiety. You become aware of your limits—aware that you can fail.

But this, Kierkegaard insists, is not tragedy.

The unhappy man is always absent from himself, never present to himself.
— Either/Or

Responsibility calls us back to presence. To be here and now. To say yes to life—even when it’s imperfect.

Because meaning, Kierkegaard reminds us, is not found—it is chosen.

2. The Leap of Faith

But there is a third stage—the hardest of all.

Beyond pleasure and duty lies what Kierkegaard calls the religious stage—
where we face the ultimate uncertainty of existence.

He writes,

Faith is precisely the contradiction between the infinite passion of inwardness and the objective uncertainty.

Faith, for Kierkegaard, is not dogma. It’s the courage to live without guarantees. It’s the willingness to act even when we’re uncertain we’re right.

This is what he refers to as the leap of faith.

And this leap is not blind—it’s existential. It’s the same leap a lover takes when saying “I do,” or an artist makes when facing the blank page. It’s the leap you make when you choose love over fear—again and again.

The German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, who shared Kierkegaard’s passion for authenticity, offered this challenge:

You must be ready to burn yourself in your own flame; how could you rise anew if you have not first become ashes?
— Thus Spoke Zarathustra

To have faith, Kierkegaard says, is to live with paradox—to accept that truth cannot be proven, yet to devote yourself to it anyway.

It’s what modern therapy refers to as existential courage—the ability to remain open in the face of uncertainty.

In The Concept of Dread, Kierkegaard put it like this,

To dare is to lose one’s footing momentarily. Not to dare is to lose oneself.

3. The Courage to Choose

So what does Kierkegaard’s Either/Or mean for us today?

It means this:

• You cannot have everything.

• You cannot know everything.

• But you can still say yes.

Freedom without responsibility becomes despair. Responsibility without grace becomes guilt. But when freedom and faith come together, they become authenticity.

In a Journal entry, Kierkegaard famously observed,

Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.

The courage to choose isn’t about being right—it’s about being real. It’s the courage to live before you understand.

And in that space—in the trembling moment between fear and faith—life unfolds.

Reflection Exercise

Take a deep breath.

And consider these questions:

• What choice am I postponing because I fear regret?

• Where have I mistaken freedom for avoidance?

• What small act of commitment could give my life more direction?

In his book The Irrational Man, the American philosopher William Barrett explained these ideas in practical terms.

The fundamental choice, says Kierkegaard, is not the choice between rival values of good and bad, but the choice by which we summon good and bad into existence for ourselves. Without such a choice, an abstract system of ethics is merely paper currency with nothing to back it up.

It’s important to remember that, even though someone might write down their values, real life often goes on as if ethics don’t matter. According to Barrett, a formal ethical theory would be pointless without the crucial act of ethical existence, where we let values guide our lives.

Final Thoughts

Kierkegaard reminds us that we do not become ourselves by escaping choice—but by entering it. Each act of decision is an act of creation.

And each moment of anxiety is the invitation to life.

• To live is to choose.

• To choose is to risk.

• And to risk is to be alive.

As Kierkegaard wisely pointed out,

The door to happiness opens inward.

The following is a transcript from “Dostoevsky on Freedom, Suffering, and Love” on the Perennial Wisdom podcast (Ep. 250).

On a freezing December morning in 1849, Fyodor Dostoevsky stood before a firing squad in St. Petersburg. The drums rolled. The rifles were raised. At the final moment, a messenger arrived from the palace: a pardon. The sentence was commuted to hard labor in Siberia.

Dostoevsky would later say that those five minutes before his expected death changed him forever. They stripped away illusion, leaving only what mattered.

In the icy prisons, surrounded by murderers and thieves, he began to see what he called “the mystery of man.” When he emerged years later, his writing would probe the human condition with a psychological and spiritual intensity unlike anything before—or since.

Today, Dostoevsky speaks to us across centuries not as a moralist, but as a witness. His novels—Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov, The Idiot, Notes from Underground—remain mirrors for our fragmented age.

1. Freedom and Responsibility

“If God is dead, everything is permitted.” — The Brothers Karamazov

In Dostoevsky’s world, this line from Ivan is not merely a philosophical statement; it’s a warning about the dangers of radical freedom. For Ivan, the death of God makes everything meaningless, and in the absence of divine morality, he believes that nothing is forbidden.

Dostoevsky understood that freedom without responsibility leads to moral chaos. This crisis of freedom is precisely what he explored in Notes from Underground, where the Underground Man mocks the idea that reason can lead to moral action:

What do I care for the laws of nature and arithmetic, if for some reason I don’t like them?

Such liberty is the voice of nihilism, a freedom that’s ungrounded and unanchored by values. It’s a freedom that suffocates us.

For Dostoevsky, freedom must be tethered to duty and moral principles. Freedom without conscience, without higher aims, leads only to despair and moral decay.

Modern thinkers like the British philosopher Isaiah Berlin have also warned against the dangers of negative liberty—the type of freedom where we reject all constraints but fail to create meaningful lives. Instead of bringing us peace, this move isolates us.

Dostoevsky noted,

The mystery of human existence lies not in staying alive, but in finding something to live for.

To Dostoevsky, true freedom is not about breaking every rule. It’s about choosing to act in ways that honor responsibility, love, and the moral law.

2. Suffering and Self-Knowledge

Pain and suffering are always inevitable for a large intelligence and a deep heart. — Crime and Punishment

Suffering is an inevitable part of life. Dostoevsky not only wrote about it but also experienced it firsthand. Exiled to Siberia and facing death, he knew what it was like to feel abandoned by God—he understood suffering in a way few others could.

In Crime and Punishment, we meet a young student who commits a murder, convinced that he is an extraordinary man who is above moral law. But after the crime, his intellect can no longer protect him from the unbearable weight of guilt. He descends into delirium.

Dostoevsky shows us that suffering is not the end—it is the beginning of redemption. It is through suffering that he faces his inner darkness and begins the path of repentance and self-knowledge.

Dostoevsky writes,

Go at once, stand at the crossroads, bow down, and say aloud, ‘I have killed.’ Then God will send you life again.

Suffering, in Dostoevsky’s world, is a necessary part of the human experience. It is the crucible in which the soul is tested and purified.

Likewise, Carl Jung, the Swiss psychologist, famously said, “There is no coming to consciousness without pain.”

Dostoevsky understood this better than anyone: suffering without meaning destroys us. But suffering with meaning leads us to a deeper self—to compassion, redemption, and hope.

For Dostoevsky, suffering, when approached with courage and humility, reveals our true selves.

3. Love and the Problem of Evil

Love in action is a harsh and dreadful thing compared to love in dreams.
— The Brothers Karamazov

Dostoevsky’s characters wrestle with the problem of evil at every turn. Ivan famously asks how a benevolent God could allow so much suffering, particularly the suffering of innocent children. The suffering of children—Ivan’s rebellion—is not just a theological argument; it is the deepest moral and spiritual wound Dostoevsky could imagine.

Dostoevsky does not try to explain away evil. He faces it head-on, acknowledging its terror. Yet, Dostoevsky offers no rational explanation for evil—only love as a remedy.

In the Grand Inquisitor parable, Ivan’s indictment of the world is met with silence and compassion by Alyosha, his brother. Alyosha, a devout monk, represents the opposite of Ivan’s cynicism. He believes in the power of love to redeem humanity, even in the face of the worst evils. Alyosha doesn’t provide intellectual answers. Instead, he lives out a vision of unconditional love.

He says,

Each of us is responsible for everyone and for everything.
— The Brothers Karamazov

Dostoevsky teaches us that evil is not overcome by reasoning or philosophy, but by the will to love—and to suffer for that love. Love, for him, is the ultimate force that redeems the world.

Interestingly, Prince Myshkin in The Idiot represents this. He is simple, pure, and loving, even though society mocks and misunderstands him. He chooses love, even when it seems like the only foolish thing to do. 

Love, in Dostoevsky’s view, is not just a feeling. It is a decision—a practice of seeing the divine in every person, no matter how broken.

The existential psychologist Erich Fromm, in his book The Art of Loving, captured this notion when he wrote:

Love is not primarily a relationship to a specific person; it is an attitude, an orientation of character which determines the relatedness of a person to the world as a whole, not toward one ‘object’ of love. If a person loves only one other person and is indifferent to the rest of his fellow men, his love is not love but a symbiotic attachment, or an enlarged egotism. Yet, most people believe that love is constituted by the object, not by the faculty.

Dostoevsky would agree. Love, in his work, is an active choice to recognize goodness even amidst evil, to heal wounds that reason cannot reach.

Final Thoughts

The darker the night, the brighter the stars; The deeper the grief, the closer is God. — Crime and Punishment

Dostoevsky’s novels are not easy to read. They require us to look into the abyss—and see our own souls reflected back. He invites us to ask the perennial question: “What kind of human being will I become?”

• Will I choose to run from the responsibility of our freedom?

• Will I avoid suffering, or let it transform me?

• And when faced with evil, will I choose to love, even when it hurts?

In a world obsessed with success, comfort, and certainty, Dostoevsky shows us that freedom without responsibility is a prison. Suffering without meaning is despair. And love, true love, is the answer to the problem of evil.

Today’s episode focuses on a man whose quiet daily life changed how we think about knowledge, morality, and meaning—Immanuel Kant.

He was born in 1724 in Königsberg, a small city in East Prussia. He never traveled far from home. But the world he explored was far larger—the world of reason, ethics, and the human soul.

Kant once said that philosophy can be reduced to three simple questions:

What can I know? What should I do? What may I hope?

In today’s episode, we’ll walk with Kant through each of these questions, explore what they meant to him—and more importantly, what they might mean to us.

1. What Can I Know?

To understand Kant’s answer, we have to rewind a little. In the 1700s, philosophers were debating what we can truly know. Some, like Descartes, believed we could attain certainty by starting from the mind. Others, like David Hume, were deeply skeptical. Hume argued that what we think of as cause and effect—like fire causing heat—wasn’t something we could prove, just something we’re used to seeing.

Kant read Hume and was shaken. He said:

I freely admit: it was the objection of David Hume which first, many years ago, interrupted my dogmatic slumber.

So he set out to answer the question: How is knowledge possible at all?

And here’s what he proposed: The world doesn’t just shape our minds—our minds shape the world we see.

We don’t just see reality; we structure it.

Imagine wearing glasses with a built-in filter—one that organizes everything you see. That’s what Kant thought the mind does. We are born with built-in “categories” like time, space, and causality. These aren’t things we discover in the world—they’re tools we use to understand it.

So what can we really know?

Kant says we can know the world as it appears to us—what he calls phenomena—but we can’t access the world as it is in itself, which he calls noumena.

He summed it up with this famous line:

I had to deny knowledge in order to make room for faith.

We’ll revisit that “faith” part later. For now, his main point is this: science can tell us a lot about the world we experience—but it can’t answer the deepest questions about existence, God, or the soul. Those belong to a different part of us—our moral and spiritual imagination.

2. What Should I Do?

This is the heart of ethics. For Kant, morality isn’t about consequences or feelings. It’s about principles. A good person does what is right—not because it feels good or leads to success—but because it’s their duty.

He called this approach the categorical imperative. It sounds intimidating, but the idea is simple: Before you act, ask yourself: What if everyone in the world did what I’m about to do? Could I will it as a universal law?

If the answer is yes, then the act is moral. If not—it’s not.

Let’s take an example. Imagine you’re contemplating lying to get out of trouble. Could lying become a universal law? If everyone lied, then trust would collapse—and even the act of lying would lose its meaning. So it fails the test.

Kant writes:

Act only according to that maxim by which you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.

He also adds another version:

Treat humanity, whether in yourself or in another, always as an end, never merely as a means.

In other words: never use people as tools. Respect their dignity.

Kant’s ethics is rooted in autonomy—the ability to govern yourself, to act from reason rather than pressure, pleasure, or fear.

And that takes courage.

This is similar to Socrates, who expressed during his trial that he would prefer to die than abandon the quest for truth. Socrates said:

The difficulty, my friends, is not in avoiding death, but in avoiding unrighteousness.

Kant agreed. To live well is to live morally—not just comfortably.

3. What May I Hope?

Here’s where Kant gets deeply human. He knew that life isn’t fair. The good suffer. The wicked prosper. The world is often unjust.

But morality, he believed, makes sense only if we can hope for a world in which justice prevails—even if it’s not in this life.

So he proposed something bold. He said: in order for ethics to be coherent, we must postulate three things:

• (1) That we are free to choose.

• (2) That our souls are immortal, so we can keep striving toward goodness.

• (3) That God exists, to ensure the highest good is possible.

Kant did not intend to suggest that we can prove these ideas. He meant they’re necessary beliefs—because without them, the moral life falls apart.

Hope, for Kant, is a bridge between what we do and what we yearn for.

Final Thoughts

Kant said all three questions—”What can I know?” “What should I do?” and “What may I hope?”—lead to a fourth: “What is the human being?”

And that, ultimately, is the heart of philosophy. We are creatures with limits. We can’t know everything. We can’t control the world. But we can choose to act morally. We can think. We can hope.

That’s what makes us human.

So why does this 18th-century thinker still matter today?

Because Kant offers us a way to think about life in an age of confusion:

• When we’re overwhelmed by information, he reminds us to ask, “What can I truly know?”

• When we face ethical dilemmas, he challenges us to ask, “What should I do—not for gain, but for good?”

• And when we feel lost, he gently asks, “What may I hope?”

These aren’t questions with quick answers.

As Kant famously said:

Dare to know. Have the courage to use your own understanding.

That’s the invitation he leaves us with. And maybe, that’s the start of philosophy—and a more thoughtful, meaningful life.

Reflection Exercise

Consider journaling or reflecting deeply on Kant’s three questions. Find a quiet space. Sit with these prompts slowly. Try to avoid rushing toward answers.

1. What can I know?

   • In what areas of life do I confuse opinion with understanding?

   • What assumptions do I rarely question?

2. What should I do?

   • Is there a situation in your life now that calls for moral clarity or courage?

   • What would it mean for you to act from duty, instead of desire?

3. What may I hope?

   • What is your deepest hope—for yourself, for the world?

   • How can your hope shape the way you live today?

Questions matter more than answers. We need to continually grapple (or wrestle) with these perennial questions as part of our ongoing journey to never stop learning how to live!

We began this series (on fear) with Socrates, who feared only one thing—not death, but unrighteousness.

A man who is good for anything ought not to calculate the chance of living or dying… he ought only to consider whether in doing anything he is doing right or wrong. — Plato, Apology

For Socrates, true fear isn’t physical danger but moral compromise. He urges us to live rightly, regardless of the cost.

Then came Maslow, whose insights pointed to the fear of greatness:

We fear our highest possibilities. We are generally afraid to become that which we can glimpse in our most perfect moments.
— The Farther Reaches of Human Nature

We don’t just fear death. We fear transcendence. The greatest temptation, as Thomas Merton wrote, is “to settle for too little.” And the greatest tragedy, Maslow warns, is to never become who we are capable of being.

Now, enter Nietzsche; he doesn’t console us. He provokes us. He doesn’t say, “You’re fine the way you are.” He says,

You must be ready to burn in your own flame. How could you rise anew, if you have not first become ashes?

Change is terrifying (at least for most of us). Even when it’s needed. Even when it’s overdue. Even when everything in us knows we’re done with who we’ve been—still we hesitate. Still, we resist.

In Twilight of the Idols, Nietzsche writes:

The snake which cannot shed its skin perishes.

If we cling to outdated versions of ourselves, we don’t just stall—we suffocate. We tell ourselves stories of safety, but these are stories of avoidance.

Comfort (or the status quo) becomes the mask that hides our fear.

And what are we really afraid of?

Not failure. Not pain. But change.

We wear roles. We perform. That’s part of life. But there comes a time when the performance becomes a prison.

What does your conscience say?, asks Nietzsche. ‘You shall become the person you are.’

This is Nietzsche’s call: not to become someone else, but to become yourself—the self buried beneath the noise and fear (and even the false humility).

He urges us to stop pretending.

To stop negotiating with mediocrity.

And to stop editing our desires merely to fit in.

Nietzsche recognized that becoming oneself is not a passive process. It is not safe. It is a struggle.

He stressed,

The higher we soar, the smaller we appear to those who cannot fly.

Overcoming the fear of change can be confusing for people. It unsettles the familiar. But the alternative? A life half-lived.

Maslow reminds us:

If you deliberately plan to be less than you are capable of being… then I warn you that you’ll be deeply unhappy for the rest of your life.

Likewise, recall that Socrates, when facing death, left us with this parting plea:

When my sons are grown, I would ask you… to trouble them, if they care about riches more than about virtue.

Reflection Exercise

To change, in a way, is to die. To grow is to grieve. You will mourn what you leave behind. But you will also taste a new freedom.

So ask yourself:

• Where in your life are you shrinking?

• Where have you chosen comfort over becoming?

• What old identity are you keeping alive, long after its purpose has passed?

Nietzsche doesn’t say it will be easy. He says it will be necessary.

In closing, Socrates taught us not to fear death, but dishonor. Maslow showed us how we shudder at our highest selves.

And Nietzsche? He says plainly, “Become who you are.”

Why do we settle for too little or lives that fall short of our highest good?

According to the American psychologist Abraham Maslow (1908—1970), and as we’ll learn, many others believe that we actually fear our highest potential.

In The Farther Reaches of Human Nature, Maslow wrote,

It is not just our evil which is unrealized... it is also the good. We fear our highest possibilities as well as our lowest ones. We are generally afraid to become that which we can glimpse in our most perfect moments.

It turns out we don’t just fear falling. We fear achieving our full potential.

It may sound strange at first.

Why would anyone fear the very thing they long for?

For many of us, there’s a quiet, hidden truth beneath our drive: we actually undermine what we most want. We create limits we pretend we didn’t set. We look down just as the horizon starts to open up.

Throughout his work, Maslow consistently noted this phenomenon. He referred to it as the Jonah Complex—the fear of achieving greatness and the fear of embracing our own path. In the same way that Jonah in the Hebrew scriptures avoided failure, we often shy away from the voice that calls us to greatness.

Maslow explained,

We fear this possibility because it calls for more effort, responsibility, and self-discipline than we feel ready to offer. We fear it because it would mean giving up the familiar comforts of mediocrity.

And so, we settle. We bury our talent. We dim our light. We edit our ambition into something safer, smaller, and more palatable.

Often, the fear of greatness disguises itself. It may appear as procrastination or self-doubt. In phrases like,

• “I’m not ready yet.”

• “Maybe later.”

• Or, “Who am I to…?”

If we listen closely, we might hear the deeper whisper underneath it all: You are afraid of becoming who you truly are.

But succumbing to this fear has its costs. “We are not merely in danger of becoming nothing,” wrote Thomas Merton. “We are in danger of becoming something other than ourselves.”

Merton, a Trappist monk and one of the 20th century’s most profound contemplative writers, believed that we often mistake comfort, approval, or external success for our deepest calling.

He once wrote in his journal, “The greatest human temptation is to settle for less than our full potential.” He believed that this urge to settle isn’t always a result of laziness—it’s often driven by fear.

Like Maslow, who wrote about the “fear of our own highest possibilities,” Merton recognized that many of us don’t flee from failure—we flee from the weight of our potential. We mistake humility for smallness. We fail to understand that true humility is not denying our gifts—it’s offering them freely.

Curiously, we know that change can be intimidating because it often involves letting go of parts of ourselves. To become who you are is to step into the unknown. It is to lose the crutches of comparison and imitation.

But what if our greatest potential wasn't just a luxury reserved for the few and privileged?

According to Maslow, we're driven to self-actualization; he believed, “What one can be, one must be.” When we disregard this call, we suffer. This suffering doesn't always manifest as a sudden breakdown, but rather as a gradual loss of joy and a quiet descent into apathy or cynicism.

It’s important to remember that our highest potential is not about becoming someone else. It involves becoming more fully ourselves: “A musician must make music,” stressed Maslow, “an artist must paint, a poet must write, if they are to be at peace with themselves.”

The following is a transcript from “Socrates on the Fear of Death” from the Perennial Wisdom podcast (Ep. 246).

Most of us will never face a trial like Socrates. We likely won’t be called before a jury of 500 of our peers, nor accused of “corrupting the youth” or impiety. And we probably won’t have to choose between exile or execution.

But we all face a much quieter and more subtle trial—every day.

We face the fear of loss, the fear of death, and the fear of change. Behind all of this, there is a deep-seated fear that we are not living our lives to the fullest.

In Plato’s Apology, Socrates stands before the Athenian court, accused and condemned. He is offered a chance to plead, to soften, to survive.

But instead, Socrates says this:

Someone will say: ‘And are you not ashamed, Socrates, of a course of life which is likely to bring you to an untimely end?’

To him I may fairly answer: There you are mistaken: a man who is good for anything ought not to calculate the chance of living or dying; he ought only to consider whether in doing anything he is doing right or wrong—acting the part of a good man or of a bad.

Socrates makes a sharp, clear, and unwavering point: our concern should not be death, but rather injustice. Life is not about survival but about virtue.

To strengthen his point, Socrates depicts a soldier to his accusers, noting that he once served himself. In battle, the key issue isn't about dying but about remaining steadfast. He says,

For wherever a man’s place is, whether the place which he has chosen or that in which he has been placed by a commander, there he ought to remain in the hour of danger; he should not think of death or of anything but of disgrace.

Most of us, likely myself included, carry a silent calculation constantly running in the background:

• Will this make me more secure?

• Will this bring approval?

• Will this help me succeed?

Socrates proposes a completely different measure, questions like: Is this right? Is this just? Is this who I want to be?

Even when facing death, Socrates stays calm—not proud or defiant, but grounded in something more profound. He suggests:

Let us reflect in this way, that there is much reason to hope for a good after death; for one of two things must be true—either death is a state of nothingness, and utter unconsciousness, or... it is a migration of the soul from this world to another.

If death is just sleep, then why fear it? If it means going to be with great souls, why run from it? But the key point is this: death is not our enemy. “The real difficulty is not to avoid death,” stressed Socrates, “but to avoid unrighteousness.”

At the end of The Apology, Socrates makes one final request to his accusers. Notice his focus on virtue rather than revenge.

When my sons are grown, I would ask you, O my friends, to punish them…
if they seem to care about riches, or anything, more than about virtue; or if they pretend to be something when they are really nothing—then reprove them, as I have reproved you…

The hour of departure has arrived, and we go our ways—I to die, and you to live. Which is better God only knows.

Even in his final moments, Socrates imparts wisdom. He invites his accusers and us to consider what they truly value.

In today’s world, conversations about virtue are uncommon. We tend to focus more on topics like achievement, safety, happiness, and productivity.

But virtue? It's about doing what's right—even when no one is watching. It means living without compromise, even if it costs you.

These are timeless lessons: they were necessary two thousand years ago for Socrates, they are necessary today, and they will continue to be in the future.

As we begin to close, I invite you to imagine Socrates not as perfect, but as free.

Free from the fear of death.

Free from the need for approval.

Free from the illusion that life is about self-preservation.

And finally, free from the perils of anger.

He says in the Apology,

I am not angry with my accusers… I leave to them and to God to determine what is best for them and for me.

The following is a transcript from “St. Francis on the Paradox of Joy” from the Perennial Wisdom podcast (Ep. 245).

Today, we journey with St. Francis of Assisi—the saint of simplicity, the lover of birds and brother sun—and we sit with one simple, yet powerful idea:

Perfect joy is not found in success or comfort, but in humility and love.

Now, granted that may sound strange. Paradoxical. Maybe even unappealing.

But stay with me.

You see, St. Francis didn’t define joy the way the world usually does. He didn’t seek it in admiration, recognition, or pleasure. He found it in letting go.

In descent, not ascent. In being emptied of pride—so that he could be filled with grace.

Let’s begin with this moment from his life—recorded in The Little Flowers of St. Francis, a collection of stories and sayings preserved by his early companions.

St. Francis is walking with his friend, Brother Leo, down a cold muddy road in winter. They’re soaked. Hungry. Shivering.

And St. Francis turns to Leo and says:

Brother, if we arrive at the monastery and they turn us away—if they shout at us, strike us, and refuse us shelter… and if we bear all of this with patience and without complaint, thinking of the sufferings of Christ—then, write this down, Brother Leo: this is perfect joy.

Now imagine that. Joy in being rejected?

In being misunderstood?

In being humiliated?

St. Francis isn’t saying we should seek out suffering. He’s saying: true joy comes when nothing can rob us of peace because joy that depends on circumstances is always fragile.

Let me ask you this, as we reflect together:

What do you believe you need to be joyful?

What stories do you tell yourself?

“If I could just get the job…” or “If I had more money… more time… more praise…”

But St. Francis invites us into a different world. One where joy isn’t earned or acquired—but received.

He writes:

Where there is poverty with joy, there is neither cupidity nor avarice.

That’s the paradox: the more we let go, the more joy we experience.

St. Francis gave everything away—not to punish himself, but to be free. Free from clinging. Free from comparison. Free from the ego that always wants more.

And when he let go of everything… he discovered everything.

His joy came from living simply. From praising God in sparrows and sunrises and scraps of bread. He didn’t need the world to applaud him—because he had awakened to the miracle of existence itself.

As he wrote in his Canticle of the Creatures:

Praised be You, my Lord, with all Your creatures, especially Brother Sun… through whom You give us light.

This kind of joy doesn’t ignore suffering. It transforms it. It doesn’t deny hardship. It simply refuses to be defined by it.

And above all, this kind of joy doesn’t wait for everything to be perfect to know peace.

As St. Francis stressed to his followers:

Let us therefore desire nothing else. Let us wish for nothing else. Let nothing else please us and cause us delight—except our Creator and Redeemer and Savior.

So maybe the invitation is simple: Let go. If that sounds like too much of a stretch. Consider simply loosening your grip…

Release the need to be admired. The need to be right. The need to win.

And instead, say yes to what is. To the present moment. To the slow, sacred work of becoming who you are.

This, at least according to St. Francis, is the path of perfect joy.

The following is a transcript from “How to ‘Look Again’ at Life” from the Perennial Wisdom podcast (Ep. 244).

Today is an invitation to “look again” at life.

One of the most humbling—and beautiful—truths about life is this: we don’t always see it clearly.

Our minds are not the precise instruments we imagine them to be. Our memories blur. Our perceptions distort. We walk through the world as though we know what’s real—yet so much of it is clouded by desire, fear, and pride.

The spiritual teacher Ram Dass—once a Harvard psychologist who became a pioneer of mindfulness in the West—described this restless state of mind in his book Be Here Now.

Ram Dass wrote:

The human mind is like that monkey, incessantly active by its own nature. Then it becomes drunk with the wine of desire, increasing its turbulence. Next comes the sting of jealousy… and at last, the demon of pride makes the mind think itself all-important.

If you’re honest, you’ve probably felt that inner monkey, haven’t you?

I know I have.

But here’s the paradox: the journey to wisdom starts when we accept that we don’t see the full picture and can't know everything with certainty. Socrates, the ancient Greek philosopher, embraced this idea as his core principle, famously stating, “All that I know is that I know nothing.”

Although this approach isn’t about surrendering, it's about staying grounded in reality.

Adam Grant—a contemporary organizational psychologist and best-selling author of Think Again—reminds us that humility is not weakness but strength.

Grant explains:

One of the Latin roots of humility means ‘from the earth.’ It’s about being grounded—recognizing that we’re flawed and fallible. You can believe in your ability to achieve your goals while still questioning if you have the right tools.

Humility doesn’t make you smaller; it makes you clearer. It helps you see yourself honestly and stand firmly—on the Earth.

And then there’s Carl Sagan—the beloved American astronomer, who helped millions of people see the wonder and fragility of our planet. When NASA’s Voyager probe photographed Earth from the edge of the solar system, he reflected on the tiny dot in that image in his book Pale Blue Dot.

Sagan observed:

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. To look again is to challenge our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged place in the Universe. Our planet is a lonely speck in the cosmic dark. There is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.

So, what does it mean to look again at life?

It means noticing.

It means pausing.

It means seeing your life, your relationships, your choices—not through the haze of assumptions and pride, but with wonder and humility.

This moment—right now—is where you are creating a life.

So take a breath.

Look again.

At your life. At yourself. At the world around you.

It’s here. It’s now.

Heraclitus on the wisdom of change

Today, on this Sunday edition of Perennial Wisdom, we are turning to the pre-Socratic philosopher Heraclitus, who famously said,

No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it is not the same river and he is not the same man. — Fragments

Heraclitus believed that everything and everyone is in a constant state of change. While this idea might seem unsettling, he presents it not as a threat but as a vital key. To live well, we must live with change, not against it.

When Heraclitus wandered through the ancient streets of Ionia in the 6th century BCE, he was known not for power or prestige, but for speaking in paradoxes. His fragments are short and cryptic, yet they reveal wisdom.

He saw what many refused to see: that stability is an illusion, and becoming is the ground of all being. “Everything flows; nothing stands still,” he stressed.

Thought Experiment

Imagine for a moment that you’re on the edge of a river: cold, clear water rushing past rocks smoothed by time. You step into it—ankle deep, then knee deep. The water is in constant flux. Heraclitus says, “The river where you set your foot just now is gone—those waters giving way to this, now this.”

The river is a metaphor. But it’s also reality.

Your thoughts change. Your body ages. Your relationships deepen, fray, and mend. “By cosmic rule… all things change,” he observed.

But Heraclitus did not teach chaos or nihilism. He taught harmony through opposites, unity through tension. The world, he said, is held together not despite conflict, but through it.

Heraclitus encourages us to accept the wisdom of change—not to fear or control it, but to see it as the fundamental nature of everything.

Can you notice the tension in your own life?

• The tension that exists between the past and the future.

• The tension that exists between who you are and who you are becoming.

According to Heraclitus, what causes us to suffer is not change, but our resistance to it. We desire to live in a stable world, instead of one that is constantly in flux.

But Heraclitus speaks with compassion to that grasping: “It is in changing that we find repose.”

The Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (a figure influenced by the writings of Heraclitus) speaks often of the wisdom of change.

In his Meditations, he asks himself,

Frightened of change? But what can exist without it? What’s closer to nature’s heart? Can you take a hot bath and leave the firewood as it was? Eat food without transforming it? Can any vital process take place without something being changed?

Can’t you see? It’s just the same with you—and just as vital to nature.

It’s important to remember that to change is not to fail. To evolve is not to betray or lose yourself. You are constantly becoming.

It can be useful to regularly reflect on questions like, “Where am I resisting change?” or “Where am I clinging to a version of myself that no longer exists?”

Curiously, what looks like loss may actually be liberation. What seems like falling could be a new beginning.

Heraclitus didn't provide a comprehensive system or a philosophy of life. Instead, he left us with fragments—like embers glowing in the darkness. Each fragment encourages us to trust the insights that change offers.

He recommended, “Applicants for wisdom, do what I have done: inquire within.” He held that self-knowledge is crucial and that embracing change allows us to better understand ourselves, others, and the world around us.

The Timeless Art of Leading a Life

“There is nothing new under the sun,” wrote the author of Ecclesiastes, and in many ways, that’s what perennial wisdom is all about. It points us to the enduring insights that human beings have revisited for centuries—truths about love, character, and the search for meaning. 

Perennial wisdom is the shared insight found across the world’s spiritual and philosophical traditions. It teaches that universal truths and enduring ideas about the good life exist. It doesn't belong to any specific tradition or time period.

This essay examines the concept of perennial wisdom through three key ideas: (1) timeless truths regarding human nature and the good life, (2) the importance of developing inner clarity and character, and (3) the relevance of these lasting insights in today’s world. Throughout, we’ll hear from philosophers, poets, saints, and psychologists, all emphasizing the importance of looking back, or to what’s enduring, to find our way.

1. Timeless truths and the good life

Some truths don’t age. They were true long before us, and they’ll still be true long after we’re gone. Perennial wisdom begins with the idea that human beings, across cultures and centuries, have wrestled with the same core questions:

• What makes life meaningful?

• How do we handle suffering?

• What does it mean to live a good life?

These questions echo through the sayings of the Buddha, the dialogues of Plato, the parables of Jesus, and the reflections of Marcus Aurelius. And while their answers take different forms, they share a pattern. They point us inward. They ask us to examine ourselves.

The Russian writer Leo Tolstoy once said, “The most necessary truths are the simplest ones.” For Tolstoy, perennial wisdom wasn’t found in theories, but in honest living—telling the truth, doing what is right, helping where we can, and restraining ourselves when needed.

These aren’t flashy ideas, but they hold up. They always have.

When Marcus Aurelius sat by lamplight in a Roman tent, writing to himself about kindness and death, he wasn’t inventing something new—he was returning to something ancient and enduring.

C.S. Lewis, in The Abolition of Man, warned about what happens when we forget these basics. “We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst,” he wrote. Lewis believed that without shared moral truths, we lose our sense of direction. We drift. And soon, we don’t just forget how to live—we forget that it even matters.

The late philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre made a similar point when he wrote, “At the foundation of moral thinking lie beliefs in statements, the truth of which no further reason can be given.” These aren’t empty slogans. They’re the roots of character. They remind us that long before we had answers, we had instincts, and many of them pointed in the right direction.

2. Building a Life from the Inside Out

Knowing what matters is only the beginning. Living it—that’s where the real work begins. If the first gift of perennial wisdom is pointing us back to enduring truths, the second is showing us how to live them. Not by memorizing rules, but by forming habits. Not by trying to be perfect, but by shaping the kind of person we’re becoming.

As Aristotle wisely put it, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” The same goes for courage, temperance, wisdom, and justice. These virtues (or character traits) don’t come from nowhere. They’re built—often slowly, often quietly—through daily effort and reflection.

Education in the deepest sense isn’t about getting smarter. It’s about growing wiser. That means paying attention to what shapes our thoughts, our choices, and our character. It means noticing when we’re pulled by pride, fear, or envy—and learning how to return to stillness.

C.S. Lewis emphasized the importance of proper moral formation. In The Abolition of Man, he warned about the risks of developing individuals without a foundation in objective values: “We make men without chests,” he stressed, “and expect of them virtue and enterprise.” Such a life, although seemingly effective externally, is fragile and prone to collapse under pressure.

Perennial wisdom teaches us to build from the inside out. It doesn’t provide shortcuts. It encourages us to become better by understanding our limitations, staying open to life, and remaining faithful to what we know is right.

3. Why Enduring Ideas Matter

Our world is filled with constant updates and relentless noise. We're encouraged to pursue progress, productivity, and success—yet often feel more overwhelmed than before. During such moments, wisdom provides reassurance, urging us to slow down, listen, and reconnect with what truly matters.

In The Happiness Hypothesis, Jonathan Haidt observes that "the most useful truths are not always new; they are often ancient insights rediscovered." His psychological studies reinforce the enduring wisdom that lasting happiness comes not from control or material possessions but from living intentionally, fostering meaningful relationships, and staying true to our core values.

Perennial wisdom is essential because it provides a solid foundation. It reminds us that, although we cannot control everything, we can choose how we lead our lives. We can choose to let universal truths and enduring ideas guide us.

Final Thoughts

Life hacks and quick fixes are everywhere—promising to make us faster, richer, and more productive. But in the long run, they rarely make us wiser or improve our lives in a meaningful way. Wisdom encourages us to take a different approach. Instead of asking, “What’s the fastest or most productive?” it asks, “What is the highest good?” or, “What does it mean to learn how to live?”

Remember that wisdom doesn’t oppose change or progress; it simply warns us not to lose ourselves in the chaos. When we are pulled in many directions, wisdom guides us back to our core. It emphasizes the importance of focusing on what truly matters and leading an intentional life.

The world will keep changing. There will always be something new to chase. But wisdom—the kind that helps us live well—consists of universal truths and enduring ideas.

Reflection Exercise

Consider finding a quiet space to reflect or journal. Attempt to let your mind settle.

• (1) Write down whatever comes to mind when you hear this question: What truly matters to me, beyond the noise and busyness of life? Don’t overthink it—simply list the words, values, or phrases that feel true to you.

• (2) Reflect on a moment in your life when you felt most in harmony with yourself: What were you doing? Who were you becoming? What qualities were you practicing?

• (3) Finally, ask yourself: What am I chasing today that doesn’t actually lead me closer to what matters? Consider writing down at least one habit, goal, or distraction that feels out of step with your deeper values.

St. Benedict on the Ladder of Humility

Today, on this Sunday edition of Perennial Wisdom, we reflect on humility—not as weakness or self-negation, but as wisdom—through the voice of one of the great spiritual teachers: St. Benedict of Nursia.

St. Benedict lived in the sixth century, during a period of political chaos and moral confusion. From this turmoil, he initiated a quiet revolution—a rule of life centered on prayer, work, and stability. His Rule became the basis for Western monasticism and continues to serve as a guide for spiritual seekers today.

At the heart of his teaching is a single word: humility.

In The Rule of St. Benedict, he writes:

The first degree of humility is prompt obedience. This comes naturally to those who hold nothing dearer to them than Christ... Such people, as soon as they are ordered to do something by a superior, as if commanded by God himself, cannot bear to delay in doing it.

At first, this may seem strict to modern listeners. However, St. Benedict isn't advocating for blind obedience—he’s illustrating a genuine attitude that no longer demands its own way. For him, true humility is not about passivity but about liberation—liberation from the tyranny of the ego.

In The Rule, humility is described as a ladder with twelve rungs. The first is obedience. But the last is this:

The monk becomes so humble that he is always saying in his heart what was said with downcast eyes by the publican in the Gospel: ‘Lord, I am a sinner, not worthy to raise my eyes to heaven.’

This humility is not self-hatred. It is not anxiety masked as piety. It is a quiet awareness of our contingency—that we are not the source of our own existence, nor the center of the universe.

As St. Benedict writes:

A man will be perfect in humility when he no longer delights in fulfilling his own desires but walks according to the will of another.

Humility, then, is about perspective. It involves shifting away from an exaggerated self-image and moving toward the truth.

In our time, where so much depends on appearance, applause, and asserting our worth, humility offers a path to freedom. It means that you don’t need to perform in order to belong. You don’t have to be exceptional (or perfect) to be loved. You are not the creator of meaning—you are its receiver.

St. Benedict encourages us to become grounded and self-aware, letting go of the illusion of control. As highlighted in the psalms: “I was exalted, but I have been humbled and overwhelmed with confusion,” this downward journey doesn't lead to despair but to inner peace.

St. Benedict writes:

Now that the monk has climbed all these steps of humility, he will quickly arrive at that perfect love of God which casts out all fear… Through this love, all that he once performed with dread, he now begins to observe without effort.

Humility is not the end of the spiritual journey; it is the starting point.

Whether you view humility as a virtue or a practice, it is essential to remember that humility is not exclusive to monks like St. Benedict.

Humility calls us all to look beyond ourselves.
