Seneca on Learning to Die

Welcome to Dying Every Day. This is Dying Daily.

Much of fear is fear of losing.

Losing comfort.

Losing status.

Losing strength.

Losing the familiar structure of the life you have arranged and quietly begun to mistake for permanent.

Seneca’s point is severe because it reaches the root. Until you have made some peace with death, you will be ruled by lesser fears. You will delay when you should begin. Cling where you should let go. Submit where you should stand upright.

To learn how to die is not to become theatrical about mortality. It is to stop treating death as a forbidden subject that all of life must tiptoe around. It is to let the fact of death restore proportion.

What matters if life is finite?

What becomes less impressive?

What fears lose some of their authority once you stop pretending permanence is on offer?

The person who cannot face death bargains with everything. They try to secure themselves through accumulation, reputation, control, busyness, and avoidance. But the soul remains anxious because it is still trying to negotiate with the nonnegotiable.

Seneca wants another kind of freedom.

The one that comes when mortality is accepted as part of the shape of things. Not welcomed sentimentally. Not denied. Simply taken seriously enough that lesser fears begin to loosen.

This is why death can become a teacher without becoming an obsession. It strips false importance from many things and restores weight to the few that deserve it: courage, temperance, wisdom, justice, and gratitude for the life you’re actually living.

To remember death is not to shrink. It is to become harder to coerce.

Perspective is one of the quietest forms of courage.

And mortality, when rightly faced, is one of its deepest sources.

So the question is not whether you will die.

The question is whether you will live before you do.

Whether you will keep bargaining with fear, or whether you will begin, quietly, to loosen its hold. Whether you will spend your days trying to secure what cannot be secured, or whether you will turn instead toward what death itself cannot take from you.

To learn how to die is not to withdraw from life.

It is to stop living as a hostage to lesser fears.

And perhaps that is the freedom Seneca is pointing to: not freedom from death, but freedom from everything that only seemed powerful because death had not yet been faced.

When mortality is no longer hidden, life becomes clearer.

Courage in Practice—Cato the Younger on Being Incorruptible

Welcome to Dying Every Day. This is Day 152.

There is a man almost no one talks about anymore, and a small detail in his story that is hard to forget once you have noticed it.

His name was Cato—Cato the Younger. He lived in the final decades of the Roman Republic, when the whole system was rotting from within. Bribery was everywhere. Everyone was on the take. Power went to whoever could buy the most votes. And Cato was the one man who would not play along.

A group of candidates for office—ambitious, self-interested men, exactly the sort you would expect to cheat—made a pact among themselves. Each would put up a large sum of money, and anyone caught bribing voters would forfeit it to the others. An honor system among people with very little honor. And they needed someone to hold the money: someone who could not be leaned on, someone who could not be bought.

They chose Cato.

Think about that for a moment: the most corrupt men in Rome, searching for the one person they could trust with their bribery fund, and arriving without dispute at the same name. That is not a reputation a person can fake. You do not talk your way into being the man the corrupt trust to protect them from each other. You have to actually be him.

Which raises a question worth asking: could anyone say that about you? Is there anyone who would hand you the money?

The bribery fund was not an isolated moment.

It was the pattern of Cato’s life.

As a young man managing the Roman treasury, Cato went after the clerks, the permanent staff who had been quietly robbing the state for years. He noticed. He cared. He exposed them and removed the worst of them. As a tribune, he prosecuted bribery without exception, sparing only his own brother-in-law, and only because prosecuting family would have looked like a personal vendetta rather than justice.

He could have held high office whenever he wanted, easily enough. All he had to do was play the game everyone else was playing. Instead, he rejected the easy paths and chose the hard ones—seeking office, as Plutarch puts it, at his peril, in order to defend the liberties of the state. He was not looking to gain from the role. He was, in Plutarch’s phrase, conferring a favor on it—bringing more integrity to the office than the office could ever return to him.

Seneca, a century later, would point to Cato again and again as proof that the Stoic sage was not just a beautiful idea but a man who had actually walked the earth.

But here is the question the story leaves open. Where did it come from—this incorruptibility so complete that it became a kind of proverb. Because you cannot reach a man through wants he does not have, or fears he has already set down. Something had been done, or built, or practiced, that placed Cato beyond the reach of the levers that move most people. What was it?

The answer lies in a book Cato loved and read famously on the last night of his life. Plato’s Phaedo.

The Phaedo is Plato’s dialogue on the soul, set in the hours before Socrates’ own death, as he explains to his friends why a philosopher need not fear dying. At its center is an idea the Greeks called the tendance of the soul—the care of the soul, above everything else. The philosopher, according to Socrates, spends his life working to free the soul from the distortions of the body—from the appetites and fears and cravings that pull a person away from what is true and good.

Think about what the body wants: comfort, safety, pleasure, survival. Each of those wants is a handle—something another person can take hold of, a lever, a briber, or a tyrant can pull. Someone ruled by the body can always be reached, because there is always something they want badly enough, or fear badly enough, to make them bend.

But the person who has cared for the soul—who has, through long practice, made the integrity of that soul matter more than the comfort or even the survival of the body—offers nothing to take hold of.

You cannot bribe a man who wants nothing you can offer.

You cannot threaten a man who fears nothing you can take.

That is what made Cato incorruptible: not willpower, not stubbornness, though his enemies certainly called it that. It was an entire orientation of the self—the conviction, drawn from the Phaedo and lived out over a lifetime, that the soul’s integrity is the one thing worth protecting, and that everything the body wants is negotiable beside it.

The corrupt men of Rome handed Cato their money because they understood, perhaps without being able to say it, that he was playing a different game than they were. They were trying to win. He was trying to remain whole. And a man trying to remain whole cannot be bought, because the only payment that would tempt him is the one thing a bribe can never include: the integrity he would have to give up to accept it.

Now, you and I are almost certainly never going to face Cato’s situation. No one is offering you the treasury of Rome. No general is marching on a Republic you have sworn to defend.

But the shape of the test is the same at every scale. There is always a path where going along is easier—where looking away pays better than speaking up, where the bribe is small enough to seem like nothing, where the compromise is so minor that taking it feels less like surrender and more like good sense.

And the question underneath it never changes: “Is there something in you that cannot be bought?”

Some integrity you have cared for so steadily, over so long, that it has quietly become—like Cato’s— beyond the reach of the things that move other people?

That is not built in the moment of testing. It is built long before, in the unglamorous, daily tendance of the soul—the small, repeated choosing of what is right over what is easy, until one day the choosing is no longer a struggle but simply a fact about who you are.

Daily Practice

Today, look for the small bribe. Not the dramatic one—the small one.

The minor compromise that would make your day a little easier. The truth that would be more convenient not to tell. The shortcut that costs only a little integrity and pays in comfort, or approval, or peace. They are everywhere, and most are so minor that taking them feels like nothing at all.

Find one. And refuse it—not because the stakes are high, but precisely because they are low. Cato’s incorruptibility was not forged in great crises. It was built in a thousand small treasuries, a thousand ordinary days, each one a quiet choice to stay whole when bending would have been easier.

The soul is tended in small things.

And it is lost in them too.

Confucius on Two Kinds of Lost

This is Perennial Meditations. A daily practice.

The first type consumes everything—self-help, philosophy, psychology, spiritual wisdom. They can quote books, explain concepts, and pinpoint what needs to change in their lives. Yet, despite all this knowledge, nothing actually changes. Reading has become a substitute for action.

They might know more about patience than anyone else, yet they remain the least patient person in the room.

The second type is always in motion. They've stayed in the same job, relationship, or recurring struggle for years, calling it experience. Yet it's not true experience; it’s the same year repeated endlessly, without pausing to reflect on the lessons it offers.

They remain busy and exhausted, but rarely wiser.

Confucius, the Chinese philosopher whose ideas influenced East Asian civilization for over 2,500 years, described two essential concepts. He believed that learning without reflection is a wasted effort, while reflection without learning can be dangerous. These represent two different paths that seem to lead to growth but ultimately lead nowhere meaningful.

What makes this worth contemplating is that these are not opposing choices but two forms of the same error.

One individual sidesteps the challenge of change by focusing on reading about it; the other avoids self-examination by staying overly busy so as not to look inward.

Both habits expose the same disconnect between the life one is living and the life one could be living.

Daily Practice

Identify which trap is more familiar—the knowing that never becomes doing, or the doing that never stops to ask why. Sit with that honestly today. Then take one small step toward the path you have been favoring least.

St. Francis on the Wisdom of Giving

This is Perennial Meditations. A daily practice.

This sounds like a pleasantry, but it is actually a provocation.

Most of us are wired to assume that receiving comes first, that we give from surplus, and that generosity is what happens after our own needs have been sufficiently met. Put plainly, we will be more generous when we have more.

We will give more time when we have more of it.

We will open our hands when we feel secure enough to let go.

St. Francis of Assisi, the 13th-century Italian friar who gave away everything he owned, including the clothes on his back, lived as though this logic were exactly backward. He did not give because he had enough. He gave because giving was the only way to discover what enough actually meant.

The open hand, he found, receives differently than the closed one. Not necessarily more, but more freely.

But this is not a lesson in charity.

It is a lesson about the nature of abundance itself. The person who hoards time finds it shrinking. The person who gives attention freely finds themselves more present, not less. The person who withholds love to protect themselves finds the protected space growing smaller and colder over time.

St. Francis understood something the philosophers had argued but rarely lived—that the self expands through giving and contracts through keeping. He also understood that a life organized around accumulation, however reasonable it seems, is quietly working against itself.

He didn’t argue this. He demonstrated it.

Daily Practice

Give something today that costs you something—time, attention, or a kind word you might have withheld. Notice what happens in the giving. Not what you receive in return. What happens inside the act itself.

“You Decide What it Means”

Welcome to Dying Every Day. This is Dying Daily.

In today’s episode of Dying Daily, an occasional and much more casual series on the podcast, we sit with a question that most of us already know the answer to but haven’t done anything about: Who (and what) are we taking for granted?

We’ve all been there: stuck in a slow line at the end of a long day, quietly frustrated at everyone and everything in our way.

In his 2005 commencement speech “This Is Water,” David Foster Wallace argued that the irritation isn't the situation—it’s a choice we don't know we're making. This episode looks at Wallace’s idea of the “default setting,” its kinship with Stoic philosophy, and the small, repeatable freedom that hides within an ordinary bad day: “You decide what it means.”

Plato on Conquering Oneself

This is Perennial Meditations. A daily practice.

Every tradition has a version of this. The Stoics called it discipline. The Buddhists called it renunciation. The Christian mystics called it mortification of the self. The language changes. The diagnosis is the same.

We are not, by nature, unified.

We contain competing appetites, contradictory impulses, and desires that pull us away from our deepest values. We want to be generous, yet we want to keep what is ours. We want to be present, yet we want to be elsewhere. We commit to change, only to see the old pattern reemerge before our resolve has cooled.

Plato saw this clearly. The soul, he argued, is not a single thing but a kind of inner republic—reason, spirit, and appetite each pressing their claim, each demanding to be heard. The well-ordered life is not a life without conflict.

It is the life in which the right thing governs.

This is not repression.

Plato was not asking us to silence the appetites but to order them—to let the deeper, wiser part of ourselves set the direction while the rest follows. The person who has achieved this, he thought, is not diminished but enlarged. They have more of themselves available, not less.

The conquest he describes is not a single victory. It is a daily negotiation, the quiet, unglamorous work of choosing again and again what you actually value over what you merely want in the moment.

Daily Practice

Where in your life are appetite and intention currently at war? Name it honestly. Today, in one small moment, let the deeper intention win. Not forever—just once. That is enough for today.

Socrates on the Examined Life

This is Perennial Meditations. A daily practice.

He said these words at his trial.

Not in a lecture hall or a private dialogue with friends, but standing before a jury of five hundred Athenians who were deciding whether he should live or die.

He had been charged with corrupting the youth of Athens and impiety toward the gods. He was seventy years old. He could have apologized, softened his position, and said what they needed to hear.

He refused. It cost him his life.

Socrates wrote nothing. Everything we know of him comes through his students, primarily Plato, which means what survived was not a system or a doctrine but a method. A way of questioning. He wandered the markets and streets of Athens, asking people to examine what they claimed to know—about justice, courage, beauty, the good life—and found, almost without exception, that the closer you looked, the less certain things became.

This was not nihilism. It was the beginning of wisdom.

The examined life is not a life of constant self-analysis or anxious introspection.

It is quieter and more demanding—the willingness to ask, with genuine honesty, whether the life you are living aligns with the person you believe yourself to be. Whether your choices reflect your values. Whether you are awake to what you are actually doing, or simply moving through the days.

Most of us avoid this question not out of laziness but out of reasonable fear. The examined life tends to ask for changes that we are not sure we are ready to make. Socrates thought the alternative was worse.

Daily Practice

Set aside five quiet minutes today. Ask yourself one honest question: “Is there an area of my life I have been avoiding looking at clearly?” You don’t have to solve anything. Just look.

The Unlived Life—Marcus Aurelius and Jung on Becoming Whole

Welcome to Dying Every Day. This is Day 151.

Three words. No context. No explanation.

Scholars have debated for centuries what Marcus meant by it, who he was describing, and why it sits there in the middle of his private journal without elaboration. But read it plainly, without the apparatus of interpretation, and the most natural reading could be that he is describing himself.

Not the emperor. Not the Stoic sage. Not the polished public figure who appears in statues and histories. The other one. The one underneath. The dark, the obstinate, the parts of his own character that did not fit the persona he was required to maintain before the Roman world every single day.

He wrote it down for himself. Three words in a private journal he never intended anyone to read.

The Meditations are usually read as the record of a man who had mastered his philosophy—reminders to himself to stay on the path he had already found. That reading is not wrong. But it is incomplete.

What Marcus does across these pages, again and again, is similar, not necessarily the same, to what Carl Jung would describe eighteen centuries later: looking directly at the parts of himself he would rather not see, naming them, and refusing to let them operate on him from the dark.

Here’s Jung:

“Everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual’s conscious life, the blacker and denser it is. If an inferiority is conscious, one always has a chance to correct it. But if it is repressed and isolated from consciousness, it never gets corrected, and is liable to burst forth suddenly in a moment of unawareness.”

The shadow, in Jung’s sense, is not the evil within us—though that is the common misreading. It is the unknown within us. Everything that has been judged unacceptable, weak, shameful, or dangerous and pushed out of conscious awareness. Not eliminated. Pushed down—where it continues to accumulate, shape behavior, and influence every relationship and decision, without the person having any idea it is doing so.

And the less you look at it, Jung says, the denser and darker it becomes.

The shadow you acknowledge can be worked with. The shadow you refuse to see is the one that bursts forth suddenly, in a moment of unawareness, the disproportionate anger, the contempt that comes from nowhere, the reaction that surprises because you didn’t know it was there.

Marcus knew it was there.

That is what makes the Meditations remarkable.

He did not write from the assumption that he had conquered his darker impulses. He wrote from the daily awareness that he hadn’t—and that the only protection against being governed by them was to keep looking at them directly.

Notice how he catches his own craving for recognition:

“You want praise from people who kick themselves every fifteen minutes, the approval of people who despise themselves.” — Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

He would not write this if he did not feel the craving. You do not warn yourself away from a desire you don’t have. This is Marcus catching his own vanity—the hunger for approval that did not fit the image of the self-sufficient Stoic and dragging it into the light, where it loses its power to operate unseen.

And here he is on the life he did not get to live:

“Just because you’ve abandoned your hopes of becoming a great thinker or scientist, don’t give up on attaining freedom, achieving humility, serving others.” — Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

Marcus had wanted to be a philosopher. He became an emperor instead—bound to duty, to war, to the endless administration of a collapsing world, with little time for the contemplative life he craved. This passage is his acknowledgment of the grief of the unlived life, the path not taken, the self he might have been.

This is the part of the shadow that Robert Johnson, a Jungian analyst and one of the most accessible interpreters of this tradition, understood better than most.

“Some of the pure gold of our personality is relegated to the shadow because it can find no place in that great leveling process that is culture. To draw the skeletons out of the closet is relatively easy, but to own the gold in the shadow is terrifying.” — Robert A. Johnson, Owning Your Own Shadow

The gold in the shadow. This is Johnson’s most important contribution—and the aspect of shadow work that the standard reading of Marcus entirely misses.

The shadow is not only what we have suppressed because it was dark. It is also what we have suppressed because it was too large, too bright, or too much of a departure from who we had decided to be. The capacities never developed.

The unlived life, which does not disappear when we abandon it but instead accumulates in the dark, demanding attention in ways that become harder to ignore.

Here is one of the more popular passages from Marcus:

“When you wake up in the morning, tell yourself: the people I deal with today will be meddling, ungrateful, arrogant, dishonest, jealous, and surly... But I have seen the beauty of good, and the ugliness of evil, and have recognized that the wrongdoer has a nature related to my own.”

The wrongdoer has a nature related to my own.

It is tempting to hear that as a confession—what I despise in them, I carry too. But that is not quite what Marcus means. He is invoking Stoic cosmology, the conviction that all rational beings share one divine reason, that we are kin, parts of a single whole. His point is an argument against anger: I owe the wrongdoer patience rather than contempt, because we share a nature, and he errs through ignorance of the good rather than malice.

That is a different road than the one Jung traveled. But it arrives somewhere close. The refusal to split the world into the good self and the bad others, to pretend the line between them is clean, does the work that shadow integration does, even though Marcus reached it through the cosmos rather than the unconscious.

Two traditions, both refusing the one comfort everyone wants: the comfort of believing the darkness is only ever in someone else.

Daily Practice

Today’s daily exercise has three movements:

1. Recognition. Identify one trait in someone else that triggers an outsized reaction in you. It’s not just mild dislike but something that truly irritates, repels, or unsettles. Then, consider Marcus’ question: “Where does this exist within me as well?” Approach this not as self-criticism but as genuine investigation. Your intense response offers a clue, indicating something you hold but have chosen to ignore.

2. The dark. Sit with whatever surfaces. Don’t dismiss it, don’t justify it, don’t rush to fix it. Simply let it be seen. The shadow loses power in direct proportion to how clearly it is seen. Name it, as Marcus named his own character in three words.

3. The gold. Now, the harder question—the one Johnson says people resist most. What unlived capacity, what suppressed quality, what abandoned possibility has been waiting in the dark? Not what is wrong with you, but what is unexpressed in you. What would you be if you allowed yourself to be more than you have permitted so far?

Finally, it’s important to remember that the Stoics held that virtue was the sole good, yet they also acknowledged that striving for virtue doesn't entirely eliminate vice. Marcus cultivated awareness by observing, recognizing, and admitting his vice daily—and you can do the same.

Heraclitus on the Only Constant

This is Perennial Meditations. A daily practice.

We have all heard this. We nod when we encounter it, the way you nod at something that sounds true without quite landing. Then life changes in a way we didn’t choose—a loss, a door closing, a season ending before we were ready—and we discover that we didn’t really accept it.

Heraclitus of Ephesus wrote in Greece around 500 BC, making him one of the oldest voices in the Western philosophical tradition. Almost nothing of his work survives except fragments—shards of thought passed down for twenty-five centuries. That so little remains, yet what remains feels so alive, is its own kind of argument for paying attention.

His central insight was not a comfort. It was a correction.

We are built, he observed, to treat the world as more solid than it is—to assume that what is here today will be here tomorrow, that the people and roles and certainties we organize our lives around are permanent fixtures rather than temporary arrangements.

They are not permanent. Everything flows. The river you step into today is not the river you stepped into yesterday. And neither are you.

This is not cause for despair. It is a cause for presence.

If nothing lasts—not the difficulty, not the grief, not even the joy—then the only wise response is to be here for it fully while it is here.

The ancient wisdom from the Greek philosophers to the Buddhist sages to the Christian mystics returns to this truth again and again across centuries and continents. Not because it is easy. Because it is necessary.

Daily Practice

The Ancient Art of Training the Mind

Welcome to Dying Every Day. This is Day 150.

Epictetus is not making a philosophical argument.

He is performing one.

He has taken the belief—death is terrible—and subjected it to a test. He has sought evidence and found a counterexample in Socrates, who faced death with equanimity.

Epictetus concluded from examination, not argument alone, that the terror lies in the opinion of death, not death itself.

This activity is philosophy as a cognitive practice. A man sitting alone, identifying a distorted belief, testing it against evidence, revising it, and recording the revision. Doing it again tomorrow. And the day after.

Here’s Epictetus again:

“Men are disturbed not by things, but by the view which they take of them.”

Epictetus condensed it into a single sentence that encapsulates the entire theoretical framework of what would eventually become cognitive behavioral therapy.

Not things. Views of things. Not what happens to you, but what you tell yourself about what happens to you.

Albert Ellis, who developed rational emotive behavior therapy in the 1950s—the direct predecessor of CBT—kept Epictetus on his desk and quoted him to his patients. Aaron Beck, who developed cognitive therapy in the 1960s and became the most influential psychotherapist of the twentieth century, built his entire clinical model on the same foundational insight.

Beck named the specific architecture of the mind that Epictetus spoke about two thousand years earlier. Beck gave this architecture a name and a structure. Three layers.

At the surface are automatic thoughts—quick, reflexive interpretations that arrive without deliberate effort and shape every emotional response before you have time to examine them. The thought arrives uninvited. It feels like a fact. You feel its consequences—the tightening, the withdrawal, the small collapse of confidence—before you have had a chance to ask whether it is true.

Beneath the automatic thoughts are intermediate beliefs or the rules and assumptions you live by. “If I fail, it means I’m inadequate. If people don’t respond warmly, they don’t like me.” These are not thoughts you have consciously chosen. They are frameworks through which every experience is filtered, invisibly, before you are aware of it.

And beneath those—deeper than either—are core beliefs.

The foundational convictions about the self, the world, and the future that were formed early, reinforced repeatedly, and have come to feel not like beliefs at all but like facts:

• “I am unlovable.”

• “The world is dangerous.”

• “The future is hopeless.”

Core beliefs are felt to be true rather than known to be true. They are not conclusions you have reasoned toward. They are the premises from which every conclusion flows—automatically, invisibly, without examination.

This is what Epictetus was working through. Not a surface automatic thought but a core belief—death is terrible—so fundamental that most people would not even recognize it as a belief. They would call it a fact. They would say: “Of course, death is terrible. Everyone knows that.”

And Epictetus stressed to his students, “Does everyone?” “Did Socrates?”

He is doing what Beck would call collaborative empiricism, testing the belief against the evidence, not accepting it as given simply because it feels true. He is examining it. Submitting it to scrutiny. Asking whether the evidence supports it.

Socrates faced death with equanimity. This means that the terror is not in death itself; it is in the opinion about death. And opinions can be examined, revised, and trained.

That word “trained” is the one Epictetus would have used. And it names what is most important and most underappreciated about Stoicism and CBT.

Neither offers an insight that can be grasped once and then held forever. Both offer a practice—a set of exercises to be performed repeatedly over time, against the grain of deeply ingrained habits.

The mind, left untrained, returns to its default beliefs.

Those beliefs produce the default suffering.

Beck found the same thing in his patients. Improvement came not from a single breakthrough understanding but from learning to consistently catch automatic thoughts, test them against evidence, and gradually revise the core beliefs generating them.

Until the new response becomes the default. Until the trained mind begins to generate different automatic thoughts—not because the world has changed, but because the mind that interprets the world has been changed through deliberate practice.

This is the most important and least romantic lesson Stoicism and CBT have to offer. There is no shortcut.

The beliefs that cause suffering were formed over years, reinforced over decades, and woven into the fabric of how you experience everything. They do not yield to a single afternoon of philosophical reflection.

The mind is trainable. The view can be changed. The automatic thought can be caught—not always, not immediately, not without effort—but caught. Examined. Revised.

The practice is available to us today. Not as a philosophy to be admired from a distance. As a set of exercises to be performed in the ordinary moments of an ordinary day, against the grain of thoughts that arrive uninvited and feel like facts.

Remember, they are not facts. They are views.

And views can be trained.

Daily Practice

Today’s exercise follows Beck’s three-layer model—applied to a single moment of distress from your own recent experience. Choose a moment from the past week when you felt a strong negative emotion. Preferably, something specific and real.

Start at the surface. What did you tell yourself in that moment?

Not what happened, but what you said to yourself about what happened. It could be something like this: “Nobody values my contribution.” “This is going to go badly.” “I always get this wrong.” That is the automatic thought. Hold it clearly.

Move deeper. What rule or assumption underlies that thought?

What framework was it expressing? If people don’t respond warmly, they don’t value me. If something goes wrong, I’m probably responsible. That is the intermediate belief—the filter the automatic thought was passing through.

Go deeper still. What foundational conviction about yourself, the world, or the future was this moment confirming? “I am inadequate.” “The world is unsafe.” That is the core belief—felt as fact and not yet examined.

Is the core belief actually supported by the evidence? What would a rational, compassionate observer say, looking at the full evidence of your life—not just the moments that confirm the belief but the ones that contradict it?

The view that has been generating the suffering—has it ever been examined? Or has it simply been felt, repeated, and reinforced until it began to feel like a fact?

The examination that starts today, continues tomorrow if needed, and can be practiced for as long as necessary, embodies what Stoicism and CBT offer.

The mind is trainable. Start today.

William James, a nineteenth-century philosopher and psychologist, spent years studying the full range of human experience—religious crisis, mystical encounter, and the ordinary texture of daily life. What he found, again and again, was that the pursuit of happiness was not a shallow concern but the deepest one, the one that motivated everything else.

But happiness, James observed, comes in two very different forms.

There is the happiness that depends on circumstances—on getting what you want, on the day cooperating, on fortune being kind. It is real, while it lasts. And it does not last.

And then there is something else. Something that does not rise and fall with the weather of events. Something James could describe but struggled to name—until he reached for a phrase that stopped him in his tracks.

Here’s how Seneca put it:

“Above all, my dear Lucilius, make this your business: learn how to feel joy.”

Learn how to feel joy. Not find joy. Not pursue joy.

Not wait for joy to arrive when circumstances improve or when the hard work is done. Learn how to feel it—as a skill, as a practice, and as something that requires instruction, effort, and time. […]

Have you observed a change in the language?

Not about actions themselves, but how people now describe them.

Nobody simply reads anymore; they “invest in their development.” Instead of just cooking, they “optimize their nutrition.” Rather than going for a walk, they “get their steps in.”

At some point, without fully realizing it, we transformed everyday experiences into a set of performance metrics. The most surprising aspect isn’t the language used but how seamlessly it has integrated into daily life. The original activities—the meal, the walk, and the book—now feel almost awkward to discuss without linking them to some form of productivity.

As though living well and improving constantly had become the same project.

They haven’t. And the confusion between them, I’ve come to think, is one of the more elegant traps of modern life—elegant because it is so difficult to object to.

Who argues against growth?

Who defends stagnation?

The trap works precisely because its premise is unimpeachable. Of course, you should be better tomorrow than you are today. Of course, the gap between who you are and who you could be deserves your attention.

Plato’s Cave and the Cost of Ignorance

Welcome to Dying Every Day. This is Day 149.

Seneca is not describing the lazy or the careless.

He is describing everyone.

Everyone wants a happy life. Everyone is moving toward something they believe will produce it. And yet the more urgently people pursue happiness without first understanding what it actually is, the further they get from it.

The wrong road, traveled faster, does not bring you closer to the destination. It carries you further away.

Plato recognized this concept four centuries earlier, illustrating it with the image of a cave:

“Imagine this: People live under the earth in a cavelike dwelling. Stretching a long way up toward the daylight is its entrance, toward which the entire cave is gathered. The people have been in this dwelling since childhood, shackled by the legs and neck. Thus they stay in the same place so that there is only one thing for them to look at: whatever they encounter in front of their faces.” — Plato, Republic

An underground cave. Dark. A fire burning somewhere behind the prisoners, casting light on the wall ahead of them.

And chained—not casually restrained, but chained from childhood, in a way that prevents even the turning of their heads. All they have ever seen are the shadows on the wall in front of them. Shadows of objects passing between the fire and their backs. Shadows they have named, cataloged, argued about, and built entire systems of knowledge around.

And they believe, because they have no experience of anything else, that the shadows are reality.

This is not a description of a lack of intelligence. That is the first and most important thing to understand. The prisoners are not foolish.

They are doing exactly what any rational person would do given their circumstances—observing what is available, making sense of it, and developing expertise in it. If you asked them what they know, they would tell you a great deal. With confidence. And they would be right, within the only world they have ever been permitted to see.

The problem is not their intelligence. It is their position. They cannot turn around. They have never seen the fire, let alone the sun. They do not know they are in a cave. They do not know there is a world outside it. And—this is the detail the allegory turns on—they do not know what they do not know.

Now imagine one of them is freed.

Not willingly. Plato is precise about this: the prisoner is compelled to stand up, to turn around, to walk toward the light. And immediately at the very first step away from the shadows, it hurts.

The pain is not incidental. It is the point.

The journey toward wisdom is not always comfortable. It begins with disorientation—the discovery that what you believed to be real is not real, or at least not the whole of real. That the world is larger and stranger and more demanding than the shadows suggested. That the expertise you developed in the cave does not transfer cleanly to the world outside it.

This is why most people do not make the journey. Not because they are unwilling in some abstract sense—but because the first steps are genuinely painful and the destination is uncertain. The shadows, by contrast, are familiar. The chains, after a lifetime, feel like home.

And here is what Plato says next—the detail most retellings skip, because it is the most uncomfortable part.

The philosopher who makes the journey, who ascends to the light and learns to see, eventually comes back. Returns to the cave. Tries to tell the prisoners what he has seen. And the prisoners mock him.

They say his eyes are ruined—he cannot even see the shadows properly anymore. They say it was better not even to think of ascending.

Here’s Plato again,

“If any one tried to free another and lead him up to the light, let them only catch the offender, and they would put him to death.” — Plato, Republic

The prisoners would kill him, at least according to Plato.

Not because they are evil. Because the person who returns from the light threatens something they cannot afford to lose—the certainty that what they see is all there is. The confidence that the shadows are real. The security of a world that, however limited, is at least familiar and agreed upon.

Ignorance is not passive.

It is not simply the absence of wisdom—a neutral state that wisdom might one day fill. Ignorance is active. It defends itself. It has a stake in its own continuation. The prisoner who has never questioned the shadows does not experience himself as ignorant. He experiences himself as knowledgeable.

And the person who tells him otherwise is not a benefactor. He is a threat.

Let’s return to Seneca:

“We will be saved if we separate ourselves from the masses. As it is, the masses stand opposed to reason, careless of how little good things they have. We must decide what we want and not be pushed this way and that.” — Seneca, On the Happy Life

Saved. That is a strong word for a Stoic philosopher. The person who follows the crowd, who accepts the masses as the measure of what is good and worth pursuing, is not simply making a lifestyle choice. They are surrendering something essential. The capacity to decide, for themselves, what they actually want—as opposed to what the crowd has decided they should want.

This is not contempt for other people. It is an honest reckoning with what happens when wisdom is not sought.

The masses, Seneca says, are terrible interpreters of truth—not because they are malicious, but because they have not examined their interpretations. They have inherited them, repeated them, reinforced them in each other, and mistaken consensus for evidence.

There are three objections to seeking wisdom (at least)—and they are worth naming, because most of us have felt at least one of them.

• The first is that wisdom is unnecessary. Life is going well enough. The shadows are familiar. Why turn around? Plato’s answer is that the cave being warm is not the same as the cave being real. Feeling sufficient from inside an incomplete picture of reality cannot be taken as evidence that the picture is complete. The prisoners most satisfied with the shadows are the ones most thoroughly invested in them—and their satisfaction is not a sign that they don’t need wisdom. It is a sign of how thoroughly they have made their peace with not having it.

• The second objection is that wisdom is impossible, that we are all, inevitably, prisoners of one cave or another. Seneca’s answer is that this is true in its strong form and irrelevant in its practical form. No one achieves perfect wisdom. But the journey matters regardless of how far you get. The prisoner who has turned around and taken three steps toward the fire is not where the philosopher is, but they are no longer facing the wall. That is not nothing. That is everything.

• The third objection is the hardest: that wisdom is not worth the effort. That the disorientation, the pain, the loss of comfortable certainty are too high a price for whatever is waiting outside the cave. Let’s do a quick thought experiment: Think of your least Stoic friend. Not your least intelligent friend. Not your least successful friend. The one whose life seems harder than it needs to be. The one who keeps arriving at the same conflicts, the same frustrations, the same suffering—as if something in the machinery keeps producing the same result no matter how the circumstances change. Now ask: What are they moving toward? And do they know what it actually is?

Because this is what Plato and Seneca are both saying, in their different ways. The suffering of the unexamined life is not incidental. It is not bad luck or unfavorable circumstances or the arbitrary cruelty of a world that doesn’t care.

Much of it—not all, but much—is the direct and predictable consequence of moving fast in the wrong direction. Of pursuing happiness without understanding what happiness actually is. Of staying in the cave because the cave is familiar, while the unexamined desires and unquestioned beliefs that keep the chains in place continue to do exactly what unexamined desires and unquestioned beliefs always do.

They produce suffering. Quietly. Consistently. Without ever announcing themselves as the cause.

We forget this—or rather, we never quite let ourselves see it—because we have been taught to think of ignorance as rest. As a neutral default. As the condition of someone who simply hasn’t gotten around to examining things yet, harmless in the meantime.

But the prisoner in the cave is not resting. He is working hard. Arguing about shadows. Competing for status within a picture of reality that does not hold. Managing the anxiety of a life built on foundations he has never examined. Defending beliefs he has never questioned. And consistently filling the silence before it can say something he doesn’t want to hear.

The cost of not seeking wisdom is not the absence of effort.

It is effort without direction.

Daily Practice

Today’s exercise asks you to locate yourself in the allegory honestly—not where you would like to be, but where you actually are.

Think again of a friend whose life seems harder than it needs to be. Hold them in mind—not with judgment, but with recognition. Because the question the allegory is really asking is not about them. It is about you.

Which beliefs are you holding that you have never examined? Which shadows are you treating as reality because you have been looking at them your whole life, and they are all you have ever seen?

Choose one. Turn around. Face the disorientation.

The sharp pains Plato describes are far less costly than the alternative—a life of effort, pointed in the wrong direction, that never quite arrives.

Seeing clearly is the practice. Begin there.

In Defense of the Examined Life

Welcome to Dying Every Day. This is Day 148.

In 399 BC, a jury of five hundred Athenian citizens voted to convict Socrates of impiety and corrupting the youth. They were now deciding his penalty. The implicit offer was simple: stop asking questions, go into exile, live quietly, and stop examining people and calling into question the beliefs they had never thought to question.

He refused. He stood before the jury and said that daily conversation about virtue and the examined life was the greatest good available to a human being—and that he would not stop, regardless of what it cost him. It cost him his life. He drank the hemlock. And the phrase he used in that courtroom, “the unexamined life is not worth living,” has been echoing for more than two thousand years.

Here’s Socrates in Plato’s Apology,

“To talk every day about virtue and the other things about which you hear me talking and examining myself and others is the greatest good to man, and the unexamined life is not worth living.”

What Socrates was not doing, standing before that jury, was making a grand gesture for posterity. He genuinely believed that a life of unexamined ease was not worth having. A man who keeps quiet to stay safe, avoids difficult questions to escape their consequences, and lets his beliefs go unexamined because examination is uncomfortable—that is not living. He is simply continuing.

Granted, that is a rather extreme position. It is meant to be.

But it raises the question that this meditation wants to press. The stakes most of us face are not execution or exile. They are quieter.

The constant presence of distractions, the social pressure to avoid questioning the beliefs held unexamined by those around us, and the exhaustion from a life that leaves little space for the kind of attention that examination demands.

No one is threatening us with death for asking questions. We simply don’t ask them—because the day is full, the questions are uncomfortable, and it’s simply easier to just continue.

But it’s also important to acknowledge that not everyone finds the examined life compelling. For some, the whole enterprise feels like a luxury—something suited to a different era, a different pace of life, not to someone with a job, kids, obligations, a life already full to the edges.

Who has the leisure to interrogate their beliefs when the day is asking everything of them?

And there is a sharper objection.

Some people actively distrust the enterprise, not because they are too busy but because they have watched people disappear into self-examination and come out the other side less capable of action, not more.

Socrates heard versions of both his entire life. They were, in the end, part of what got him killed—not because his accusers were simply afraid of a philosopher, but because they were afraid of what examination does to comfortable certainties. He had spent decades questioning people who were sure of themselves and leaving them less sure.

Which raises the question neither objection can quite answer: If you never examine your beliefs, how do you know which ones are actually yours—and which ones simply arrived, uninvited, from the culture and the crowd and the inherited assumptions of the world you happened to be born into?

That is the question Musonius Rufus spent his life answering. Not with an abstract argument. With something more practical and more honest.

Musonius Rufus was a first-century Roman Stoic—Epictetus’ teacher. He has been called the Roman Socrates, which is apt in more than one way: like Socrates, he wrote nothing himself. What survives are notes taken by his students—compressed, practical records of a man more interested in changing how people lived on a Tuesday afternoon than in building a philosophical system.

He was exiled twice by Roman emperors who found his influence threatening. He returned both times and continued teaching.

His lectures are among the most practical and grounded teachings in the entire Stoic canon. The core idea he presents is something like this:

The philosopher should be seen as a healer rather than a logician, debater, or system creator. Like a doctor, their goal isn't to showcase intellect but to foster health, making the necessary changes in the individual. It's not about intellectual or cultural prestige but about effectiveness. When practiced sincerely, it results in a transformed, improved way of living.

And the sentence the whole passage lands on:

For only in this way will philosophy be of profit to anyone, if to sound teaching he adds conduct in harmony with it.

Sound teaching plus conduct in harmony with it. Knowing plus doing. Understanding plus living accordingly.

This is where Musonius and Socrates align.

What Musonius is saying—what Socrates said before him, with his life—is that philosophy is not an optional enrichment for people with the luxury of intellectual interest. It is the difference between a life that is being lived and a life that is simply being continued.

Socrates made the examined life an absolute. The unexamined life is not worth living—full stop, no qualifications. It is the statement of a man who had spent his entire life in examination and arrived at a conviction so total that he was willing to die rather than compromise it.

Musonius is more practical. He is not asking his students to choose between philosophy and death. He is asking them to close whatever gap exists in their own lives between what they know and how they live.

That is a smaller ask. And for most of us living without execution or exile, it is the more immediately relevant one. But do not mistake smaller for easier.

The gap between knowing and living is the hardest gap there is. Musonius knew this. He spent his career in front of people who understood Stoic philosophy perfectly well and still went home and lived as if they didn’t.

The real question isn't whether you're prepared to die for the examined life. Instead, it's whether you're willing to truly live it through everyday choices. This means scrutinizing a belief rather than just accepting it and questioning a habit rather than mindlessly repeating it.

The gap between knowing and living closes only on the inside, in ordinary moments when what you have heard either changes how you act or it doesn’t.

No jury is watching. No emperor is threatening exile. The only thing requiring the examined life from you today is you—and the quiet recognition that continuing without examination is itself a choice, made by default each day.

Musonius believed the gap could be closed. Socrates believed that closing it was the only life worth living.

Daily Practice

Two parts—one for understanding, one for living.

First, choose one belief you have never truly examined—not in theory but in a personal context. This could be a belief about yourself, your capabilities, what you deserve, or the kind of person you are. Pick one belief that has quietly influenced your life without you ever directly questioning it.

Examine it closely. Question its truth. Consider its origin. Reflect on whether you would still accept it if you had selected it intentionally instead of inheriting it.

Second, identify one place where there is a gap between your philosophy and your conduct. One area where what you believe is not reflected in how you live. Not as self-criticism, but as honest observation.

The gap is the beginning.

Seeing it clearly is the practice.

Two Paradoxes, One Truth

He endured seven and a half years at the Hanoi Hilton, sustained by a philosophy his captors could not break. This is the essence of the Stockdale Paradox and Cicero’s Paradox—two thousand years apart, yet conveying the same insight.

Dear Fellow Traveler,

The self-help industry has a complicated relationship with difficulty.

It will happily sell you tools for managing difficulty, frameworks for reframing it, morning routines for preventing it, and, if things get really bad, a guided meditation for accepting it.

What it is notably less enthusiastic about is the idea that difficulty might not be something to solve. Instead, some challenges in life are not barriers to flourishing but rather the very means through which flourishing becomes possible. This is an old idea.

It is also, in the current climate, a quietly radical one.

St. John of the Cross (1542–1591), the Spanish mystic, poet, and sometimes prisoner of his own religious order, addressed the subject with remarkable clarity and honesty.

He called it the dark night of the soul.

A phrase that has since been borrowed so promiscuously by the culture—applied to bad weeks, difficult relationships, career pivots, and general existential Tuesdays—that it has nearly lost its original meaning.

That is a shame, because the original meaning is considerably more useful than the diluted version.

For St. John of the Cross, the dark night was not a metaphor for feeling bad. It was a precise description of a specific interior experience—the experience of having the things you relied on for meaning, comfort, and a sense of self go quiet. Not disappear dramatically. Just go quiet.

The practices that once sustained you begin to feel empty.

The frameworks that once organized your life begin to feel thin.

And you are left in an interior darkness that, St. John insisted, is not a sign that something has gone wrong. It is a sign that something is going right.

The consolations had to fall quiet because you were leaning on them too heavily—mistaking the costume for the person wearing it, the comfort for the thing that truly sustains. The dark night strips away false supports, not to leave you with nothing, but to reveal what was always there beneath.

Something sturdier. Quieter. And less dependent on everything going well.

Thomas Merton (1915–1968)—the American Trappist monk who became one of the 20th century’s most widely read spiritual writers, largely by being more honest about doubt than most spiritual writers are permitted to be—spent years living inside the tradition St. John of the Cross described. And he added something John couldn’t quite have anticipated: a diagnosis of why the modern version of this experience is so particularly disorienting.

The problem, Merton thought, is that we arrive at the dark night carrying an extra burden. We arrive carrying the false self.

What Are You Running From?—Seneca and Socrates on Solitude

Welcome to Dying Every Day. This is Day 147.

Hold that word—ridiculous.

Socrates is not being modest. He is saying something he believed with complete seriousness: that without self-knowledge, every other investigation a person undertakes is built on sand. That the myths, the cosmologies, the political theories, the debates about the nature of the gods—all of it is irrelevant until the prior work is done.

And the prior work is not done. He is not done. After a lifetime of asking, in conversation with everyone Athens had to offer, the man who gave his life to the examined life says: “I have not yet managed to know myself.”

“Know thyself,” the words inscribed at the entrance to the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. Not know the world. Not know the gods. Know yourself—and understand that until you do, everything else you investigate is a distraction from the only question that finally matters.

The question this meditation wants to sit with is not whether you know yourself. It is whether you have given yourself any real opportunity to find out. And beneath that, what you believe self-knowledge is actually for.

For this reason, Seneca advised Lucilius to “withdraw into yourself as much as you can.” He wrote these words in a letter about the danger of crowds, of what happens to the self when it is constantly surrounded by noise and people and stimulation. His warning is not against other people as such. It is against a particular condition: the self that has never been alone with itself long enough to know what it actually is.

The self that exists only in reaction to the world—shaped by whatever and whoever happened to be nearby, wanting what the crowd wants, fearing what the crowd fears—is not really a self at all.

It is a collection of responses.

A set of habits that arrived without being chosen.

It’s important to remember that solitude is not a rejection of the world but a practice—a deliberate return to the interior, where the only voice is your own.

But withdraw toward what? The “withdrawal” Seneca recommends is ultimately a retreat into the hours of your own life, reclaimed from the crowd that would otherwise spend them for you. The crowd leaves its mark whether you notice or not. Spend enough time in it, and you find yourself living a life you never quite decided to live—shaped by its pressures, its distractions, its definitions of what matters—without ever having stopped long enough to ask whether any of it is actually yours.

For Seneca and Socrates, self-knowledge is not an abstract philosophical achievement. It is practical and urgent.

You withdraw into yourself in order to recover the life that is slipping away—to examine what you actually believe, what you actually value, what you are actually doing with the time that is genuinely yours.

The crowd makes that examination impossible, not because it is malicious, but because it is constant. But why? Why is the crowd so appealing, the noise so preferable to silence, and the busyness so much easier to sustain than the withdrawal Seneca recommends?

Interestingly, Blaise Pascal famously answered that question:

Pascal was a seventeenth-century French mathematician, physicist, and philosopher—one of the most brilliant minds of his century. And what he found, when he turned his attention from mathematics to the human condition, was a single condition underlying almost every form of human suffering.

Not laziness. Not malice. Not ignorance.

The inability to sit quietly in a room alone.

Notice the word he uses. Not unwillingness. Not failure. Inability. Pascal is not making a moral judgment. He is making a diagnosis. And what he is diagnosing is something more fundamental than distraction or busyness—a deep, almost constitutional incapacity to be present with one’s own interior life.

Why? Because the silence is not empty.

That is the thing Pascal understood that the others only approached. The reason people cannot sit quietly in a room alone is not that there is nothing there. It is that there is something there, and what they would find may not be what they expected or wanted.

The crowd is not merely a distraction. It is a refuge. A place to hide from the self that would surface in the silence.

Every obligation accepted, every notification answered, every hour filled with the appearance of productivity—these are not simply failures of discipline. They are, at some level, a flight. From what Seneca calls the withdrawal. From what Socrates called the only investigation worth undertaking.

Pascal continues—and this is where the diagnosis becomes more precise:

“We almost never think of the present, and if we do think of it, it is only to see what light it throws on our plans for the future. The present is never our end. Thus we never actually live, but hope to live, and since we are always planning how to be happy, it is inevitable that we should never be so.”

We never actually live, but hope to live.

This is not a description of the idle or the careless. It is a description of the busy. The productive. The people who are always moving, always planning, always preparing for the life they intend to inhabit once the current obligations have been discharged, which they never quite are.

The person who cannot sit quietly in a room alone cannot live in the present. Because the present is exactly what the flight from solitude is a flight from. The noise, the crowd, the endless forward motion—these keep the present at bay, keep the self from having to look at what is actually here, what is actually true, what has actually been chosen, and what has simply accumulated.

And so they never actually live.

They hope to live.

They plan to live.

They intend, when the time is right, to examine the life they are living. But the time is never quite right, and the examination never quite happens, and the years pass in a manner that Seneca named: “before we knew it was passing.”

This is what self-knowledge is for. Not as an abstract philosophical achievement. Not as a private consolation. But as the only alternative to hoping to live while your actual life goes unexamined beside you.

Socrates knew himself well enough to die for his convictions—to stand in front of a jury that was offering him his life in exchange for his silence. Seneca withdrew in order to recover the time that was genuinely his and spend it on what actually mattered. And Pascal sat quietly in a room and found God.

Different destinations from the same practice. Which raises the question this meditation has been guiding you to: What are you withdrawing toward?

Not just what you are withdrawing from—the crowd, the noise, the obligations that fill every hour. But toward. What is waiting for you in the silence that you have not yet had the courage or the leisure to find?

To revisit our opening passage:

Socrates said this near the end of his life, after decades of the most rigorous self-examination his world had produced. He was not done. He knew he was not done. And that knowledge—that the investigation is never finished, that the withdrawal is not a one-time exercise but a daily discipline, and that the room we cannot sit in quietly is the one we most need to enter, again and again.

Daily Practice

Find twenty minutes today. Not at your desk, not with your phone, not with music or a podcast or anything that fills the silence before it can speak.

Sit. Alone. Quietly.

Don’t meditate in any formal sense. Don’t journal. Don’t try to be productive in the silence. Simply notice what arrives when nothing else does. Notice what your mind moves toward when there is nothing to move toward. Notice what surfaces when the noise stops—what you have been too busy, too distracted, or perhaps too afraid to hear.

And when you find it—whatever it is— ask this question:

Is this what I would choose if I were choosing deliberately, with full awareness of the time I am spending and what I am spending it on?

That question, asked honestly in the silence, is the beginning of the examined life. Begin there.

Church warns a graduating class not to turn the people they love into holiday strings—the ones who understand when you're too busy, whom you keep meaning to call, whom you'll see at Christmas. Interestingly, Seneca made the same argument two thousand years ago: life feels short because we give our time to everything that demands it, while the people who matter most get what's left over.

This episode is intended to be a conversation and an invitation to choose differently—today, before the day is over, with whoever has been sitting at the back of your mind waiting for a moment that never quite arrives.

Dear Fellow Traveler,

Have you ever left a reunion wanting things you didn’t want before you arrived?

Not dramatically.

Just the low hum of a recalibrated appetite—a neighborhood that suddenly seems more desirable, a career move that hadn’t occurred to you that morning, a quiet dissatisfaction with something that was perfectly adequate on the way there. The gathering didn’t give you these wants.

It borrowed them from someone else and handed them to you so smoothly you mistook them for your own.

This is what reunions actually do, underneath the warmth. Jobs, salaries obliquely referenced, neighborhoods, schools for the children, recent travel, home renovations. The automatic process of locating everyone in relation to everyone else.

We leave knowing roughly where we rank.

And having updated, without deciding to, what we should want next.

René Girard (1923–2015) spent his career trying to explain why this happens—and why it happens so automatically that we almost never notice it. His central insight was simple and quietly devastating: we rarely want things for their own sake. We want them because someone else wants them. He called it “mimetic desire”—from the Greek mimesis, imitation.

The wanting is borrowed before we know we’re borrowing it.

This is not a cynical claim. Girard wasn’t suggesting that human desire is hollow. He was making a more precise observation: that desire needs a model. Before we want something, we need to see someone else wanting it, or having it, or being seen to have it. The object itself is almost secondary.

What we’re really tracking is the person who seems, through their wanting, to possess something we lack. Some fullness. Some arrival. Some quality of being that the desired object appears to confer.

And here is where Girard becomes most unsettling. The model who makes the object desirable eventually becomes the rival who makes it threatening. As you close the distance between yourself and what someone else has, inspiration quietly curdles into competition. The friend whose success once motivated you begins to feel like a rebuke. The colleague you admired becomes the one you measure yourself against with increasing unease.

Mimetic desire doesn’t just borrow—it escalates. The wanting intensifies precisely as it approaches what it wants.

This is why the reunion inventory feels so charged underneath its warmth. We are not comparing possessions. We are tracking proximity to models—and feeling, in the gaps between conversations, the pressure of desires we absorbed so long ago, which we’ve mistaken for our own.

The tragedy Girard identified is that mimetic desire is self-defeating by design.

Acquiring the desired object doesn’t resolve the wanting—it simply relocates it. The arrival never quite arrives. And the person who has spent years pursuing borrowed appetites may find, on reaching them, that they were never really theirs to begin with.

The American essayist Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862) didn’t have Girard’s vocabulary. But he had the same diagnosis—and he did something Girard never managed: he ran the experiment.

In the summer of 1845, Thoreau built a small cabin on the shore of Walden Pond in Concord, Massachusetts, and lived there for two years, two months, and two days. The cultural mythology around his life tends toward the romantic—a man alone in the woods, communing with nature, living nobly and simply.

The reality was more interesting and considerably less pure. Thoreau walked into town regularly. He had dinner with his mother. He was not a hermit, and he knew it. What he was, more precisely, was a man attempting to find out what he actually wanted when stripped of what his neighbors wanted.

That is the real experiment of Walden—harder than the romantic version suggests. Thoreau understood that mimetic desire is less like a choice and more like a climate. Ambient. Airborne. It doesn’t announce itself—it simply becomes the atmosphere you breathe, shaping appetite and ambition so gradually that you eventually lose the ability to distinguish what you genuinely want from what the climate has been depositing in you all along.

He went to the woods to change the air.

Not permanently—Thoreau was too honest for that kind of romanticism.

There Are Two Kinds of Joy—Most People Are Chasing the Wrong One

Welcome to Dying Every Day. This is Day 146.

James is not answering it yet. He is naming it—honestly, without embarrassment—as the question most of us are actually living, beneath whatever other questions we think we are asking.

The secret motive.

The “thing” behind the thing.

This series has spent several episodes in difficult territory. Courage, death, control, desire, anger, and assent. The philosophical work of looking clearly at hard things. And today we turn—deliberately—toward something the series has circled without landing on. Joy.

Not as a retreat from difficulty. Not as a reward for those who have done the harder work. But as something Seneca argued was the hardest work of all.

Something that had to be learned, cultivated, and practiced. Something, he insisted, that most people who think they have it do not actually have at all.

William James, a nineteenth-century philosopher and psychologist, spent years studying the full range of human experience—religious crisis, mystical encounter, and the ordinary texture of daily life. What he found, again and again, was that the pursuit of happiness was not a shallow concern but the deepest one, the one that motivated everything else.

But happiness, James observed, comes in two very different forms.

There is the happiness that depends on circumstances—on getting what you want, on the day cooperating, on fortune being kind. It is real, while it lasts. And it does not last.

And then there is something else. Something that does not rise and fall with the weather of events. Something James could describe but struggled to name—until he reached for a phrase that stopped him in his tracks. More on that in a few moments.

Here’s how Seneca put it:

“Above all, my dear Lucilius, make this your business: learn how to feel joy.”

Learn how to feel joy. Not find joy. Not pursue joy. Not wait for joy to arrive when circumstances improve or when the hard work is done. Learn how to feel it—as a skill, as a practice, and as something that requires instruction, effort, and time.

Seneca is writing this letter from retirement, near the end of his life. He has governed, advised an emperor, survived exile, and watched friends die. He is not writing from a position of comfortable ease. He is writing from within a life that has asked a great deal of him—and he is telling Lucilius (and us, I might add), with an urgency that crosses two thousand years, make this your business.

He continues:

“Do you think that I am now robbing you of many pleasures when I try to do away with the gifts of chance? Quite the contrary—I do not wish you ever to be deprived of gladness. I would have it born in your house; and it is born there, if only it be inside of you.”

Born in your house. Inside of you.

Stay with that image for a moment. Not imported from somewhere else. Not contingent on what the morning delivers or what fortune decides to give or withhold. Born in the house—already there, already available, needing only to be found and cultivated and tended.

This is the distinction Seneca presses. There is the joy that comes from outside: from pleasure, from success, from circumstances arranging themselves favorably. He does not dismiss it—he knows it is real, he knows it feels like joy, he knows why people spend their lives chasing it. But he calls it a coating. A thin pleasure laid over the surface of things, plated rather than solid. And plating wears off.

What he is after—what he wants for Lucilius—is something underneath. Something that discloses itself more fully the deeper you penetrate into it. Something that does not depend on fortune because it does not come from fortune.

Now back to James. And what he offers next is one of the most precise descriptions of this interior condition in modern philosophy:

Solemn joy, mixed with a touch of bitterness in its sweetness.

This is not the joy of a good day. This is not the happiness of getting what you wanted or the relief of things going well. This is something older and stranger—a joy that has not turned away from difficulty but has passed through it and arrived somewhere that difficulty can no longer destabilize.

A joy that contains its own opposite in solution. That knows what sorrow is, has consented to it, and remains.

Seneca said something almost identical in language that might surprise us coming from a Stoic philosopher: real joy, believe me, is a stern matter. Not cheerful, not light, not the blithe expression of a man whose life has been easy. Stern. Solid. Revealing itself more fully, the deeper you go.

Both men describe the same interior condition. Not a feeling that comes and goes, but a quality of the soul that persists beneath the feelings. Not happiness as we usually mean it—dependent, fragile, and contingent on the world’s cooperation.

This notion is what the last few episodes have been leading up to, and what must be stated clearly before we proceed.

This kind of joy is not easier than grief, anger, or loss. It is harder. The plated pleasure is simpler—it requires nothing of you except that you keep fortune on your side, which is to say it requires something you cannot guarantee. But the deep vein Seneca points to requires everything the series has been practicing: the willingness to face death without flinching, to examine what you are attached to, to look at your anger and find the must beneath it, and to catch the impression before you assent to it automatically.

The person who wants the coating is choosing something that feels easier.

The person who goes for the deep vein is choosing something that will cost them. Something that James called solemn. Something that Seneca called stern. Something that contains its opposite in solution, because it has not been purchased by looking away.

The meditations that brought us here were not simply exercises in philosophical difficulty. They were preparation. Each one removed a piece of the furniture of false joy—the pleasures that depend on fortune, the happiness that rises and falls with the day—and in doing so, cleared ground for something else. Something born in the house rather than imported.

Something that discloses itself more fully as you penetrate deeper.

Seneca put it this way,

“The yield of poor mines is on the surface; those are really rich whose veins lurk deep, and they will make more bountiful returns to the one who delves unceasingly.”

Delves unceasingly. That is the word for it. Not arrived at once, not achieved in a single meditation, a good week, or a moment of clarity. Delved into. Returned to. Worked, the way a miner works a rich seam—with patience, persistence, and the knowledge that what is most valuable is not on the surface and never was.

James spent his life studying the moments when people encountered something real beneath the surface of ordinary experience. He found it in religious conversion, in crisis, in the instances when the usual defenses gave way and something underneath was briefly visible. He would have recognized Seneca’s mine. He would have nodded at the solemn joy of it—the bitter in the sweetness of a joy that has been worked for rather than received.

They arrived at this place by different routes. James, the pragmatist, asked what works, what produces genuine human flourishing across the full range of experience, including its darkest stretches. Seneca, the Stoic, asked what is true—what kind of joy rests on a foundation fortune cannot reach. Different questions. In the same vein.

Daily Practice

Today’s daily practice is different from the others in this series. It does not ask you to examine a difficulty, find a must, notice an impression, or practice restraint. It asks you to look for what Seneca calls the true good—and to sit with what you find.

At some point today, stop.

Identify one thing that comes from your own store—not from fortune, not from cooperating circumstances, not from what someone did or didn’t do. Something that is yours because of who you are becoming and how you have chosen to live. A quality of character you have practiced. A relationship you have tended honestly. A commitment you have kept when keeping it was hard.

Sit with it. Not with pride—with something quieter and more honest. The recognition that something real is there. Something the day’s events cannot give and cannot take.

James called it solemn joy. Seneca called it the true good. Both spent their lives pointing toward it—not because it was easy to find, but because nothing else, in the end, was worth looking for.

Somewhere today, someone is calling their mother.

Somewhere else, someone wishes they still could.

Mother’s Day has a way of stirring both gratitude and grief. It reminds us how deeply we are shaped by those who first cared for us—and how fragile every human relationship ultimately is.

Seneca understood this well.

During his exile from Rome, separated from family, reputation, and public life, he wrote Consolation to Helvia to comfort his mother. But beneath the philosophy lies something deeply human: the voice of a son trying to reassure the person who loved him first.

And again and again, he returns to one central truth: distance cannot destroy what matters most.

“Though absent in body, I am present in spirit. The mind travels swiftly wherever it wishes; it leaps across seas and lands with ease. We are separated only in appearance. In thought and affection, we are still together.”

There is something timeless in that.

Long before phones, photographs, or voicemails were saved, Seneca understood that love leaves traces. The people who shape us continue to live within us long after circumstances change.

For Seneca, exile was not the real tragedy. Losing oneself was.

That is why he reminds Helvia that external losses can never touch the deepest part of a person:

“No one can be deprived of his virtue; fortune may strip away wealth, honors, and all the gifts that depend upon chance, but the mind, if it has once become upright and ordered, remains its own master. Whatever is truly ours travels with us.”

Even here, speaking to his mother, Seneca sounds unmistakably Stoic. But this is not cold philosophy. It is an attempt to anchor love in something deeper than circumstance.

He praises Helvia not for beauty, status, or wealth, but for the kind of character that hardship cannot destroy:

“You never lowered yourself to the vices of your age. Luxury did not corrupt you. Wealth did not make you proud. Your greatest ornament was always your character.”

For Seneca, the highest praise is never outward. It is inward steadiness. Wisdom. Temperance. Courage. Justice.

And perhaps this is the deepest inheritance parents give their children—not success, not possessions, but an example of how to live.

• A certain tone of voice.

• A way of facing difficulty.

• A kind of patience.

• A way of loving others.

These often remain with us longer than anything material ever could.

Seneca also refuses to pretend that grief is weakness. He does not tell his mother not to suffer. Instead, he reminds her that human beings were made both to love and to endure.

“Nature gave us tears, but she also gave us strength. She allowed us to feel sorrow, but not to be conquered by it.”

That may be the balance wisdom asks of us.

Not detachment from people, but freedom from despair. Not loving less, but loving without clinging.

Today, many people will celebrate joyfully. Others will sit quietly with memory. Some will scroll through old photographs. Some will replay old conversations. Some mothers will spend the day exhausted by invisible acts of care. Others will grieve children they never had the chance to watch grow older.

Seneca’s words leave room for all of it.

Because beneath the philosophy lies a simple truth: the people we love shape us. Distance cannot fully remove them. Time cannot completely erase them. Even grief itself becomes evidence that love matters.

Perhaps the best way to honor those who formed us is not merely to remember them but to carry on the work they began in us.

To become a little steadier. A little kinder. A little wiser. A little more capable of enduring life with grace.

That may be the deepest gratitude of all.
